  • Some Help with AVI_IO / YUV2 / TMPGEnc

    Hi Everyone,

I've been trying for the past 4 hours to do the following:

-Test capture video from VHS via my ATI AIW 9700 Pro with the final goal of being able to convert it to DVD (just for testing purposes now). I'm doing this now so that I will be able to better understand the steps needed to go from VHS to DVD, as I will be doing ALOT of converting of my parents VHS family video's to DVD in the near future.

What have successfully accomplished the following so far:

-Captured 5:22 of video from VHS using AVI_IO @ 720x480 using HUFFYUV 2.1.1 codec into a file that is 2.67GB.

I am having trouble with the next step (and I am guessing here) which is converting the .AVI to MPEG-2 via TMPGEnc.

However since I am new to all this, I am sure I am missing a step because TMPGEnc will NOT accept the .AVI as a source for video / audio file to create the final MPEG-2. It scans the file when I browse to it using the wizard, but gives me no error message after its done scanning the file. The app sits there as if its frozen, but according to TaskManager its running.

I have spent most of my time trying to make heads or tails of all the different tutorials on VCDHelp and Doom9.net with no success. I am now turning to you all who I hope can help me out.

I have AVI_IO Trial, HUFFYUV 2.1.1 Codec, TMPGEnc Trial 2.59 (I think) and VirtualDub 1.5.1 installed and available on both the systems in my sig.

If you guys need more details (I'm sure you do), please says so and I'll do my best to answer. Thanks in advance for your help!

What bitrate are you using for the final mpeg?

On a P3-700 it could take a while. It took my 1200 Athlon 36 hours to render 90 minutes of MJPEG video at 704x480, minimum compression (2 pass VBR, 2600 average bitrate). The data rate of the file you're working with is a lot higher.

If you can network your two computers together, pass the video over to the P4 system and try running TMPGEnc on it.

by default the MPEG-2 capabilities of TMPEG's trial version expires after 30 days ...

could that be your problem ?

KRSESQ : I have moved the resulting .AVI from the P3 system to the P4 before running TMPGEnc on the .AVI.

MAGGI : I guess that it is a distinct possiblity. However should it not still OPEN the .AVI file as input regardless of what format I want to output it to?

My only additional info so far is that maybe TMPGEnc Trial does not accept files over 2GB in size?

I've rebooted both machines and am going to attempt compressing the video on the P3 to see if that helps. Its my only remaining option at the moment.

EDIT : I tried it on my P3 system and it worked (go figure). I re-installed TMPGEnc on the P4 system and viola that worked also. So thank you all for your help, but in the end I guess it just needed a new re-install.
