  • Transparent ceramic....

The Fraunhofer Institute ceramic research lab in Dresden, Germany, has developed transparent alumina by subjecting fine-grained aluminum to 1200 degrees Celsius.

The result is extremely light, but three times tougher than hardened steel of the same thickness (it is a corundum after all) and translucent.

    Fraunhofer Institute article....

Scotty....are you on a time-trip back to Germany?

It does have a 'The voyage Home' feel to it!

Can it take the wales though?
The Welsh support two teams when it comes to rugby. Wales of course, and anyone else playing England

Old news. It's just aluminum oxide glass, as opposed to silicon dioxide.

I see A LOT of potential for such a product!!! Especially in space applications.

Would be cool to have a computer tower made of this stuff too, just for bragging rights though.

        Edit: graging? I meant bragging.

I've got the feeling that this stuff will be a little hard to come by for a while.

            Scotty: "Computer?"

Bones: "Maybe you should try this" (holding up a mouse)

            Scotty: "Ah, Hello computer..."

            hehehe
