  • Access Clone?

Again, just trying to switch up my software lineup and look for newer, more streamlined things...

I'm considering using Openoffice 1.3 instead of MS Office, however, it will lack MS Access. Are there any free programs out there that are access compatible?

Wait, let me be more constructive...

      ACCESS isn't access compatible.

At least not for more than one version at a time. And the free office apps are only hovering at 90% compatibility overall.

So your odds are slim. But hey, I could be wrong. It's been known to happen.

Oh, trust me, I know Access is crap, but it's the only way I know how to make a simple DB driven website as of right now.

              You could go get MySQL.

Yah. I'd recommend spending the day or two it takes to get MySQL, configure it, and learn enough PHP to work it. Not so hard, really... and a good sight better than Access.

Hmmm, it's a possibility. I'm just trying to avoid as much MS stuff as possible.

You can in fact, download Oracle and use it free if you are doing it to develop and prototype database programs.
Of course, if you want to use it in production, it's pretty expensive.

Interesting possiblility from an Oracle mailing list.

I would advise comparing PostgreSQL (also opensource)
to Oracle vs. MySQL. MySQL is more comparable to
Access or SQL Server than Oracle IMHO.

PostgreSQL just beat out Oracle to be picked to be the
database to manage the .org domain names....

The world's most advanced open source database.

                      But for MySQL info:

I'd suggest you search USENET on MySQL vs Oracle if
you want...I found a ton of stuff there just now...

You can use Google for this...put the search term
in...and look at the groups tab. I find USENET to be
one of my best sources of info...

We are an all MS shop (except for Oracle).
I am mainly a DB programmer and designer for applications, not web, but I use ASP to do the small amount of web interface DB stuff I'm responsible for.
                          It was easy to learn.
                          You can also use JAVA.

I believe the commerical version of Star Office 6.0 has a gui front end designer that gets the same job done as Access. If you're just using it as the back end to a website, try to pick up MySQL or Postgres. Learning SQL is a pain, but worth it.

                              No no.

MySQL and PostgreSQL are database SERVERS.

To create the database you still need a DB tool, any will do if you aren't connecting to an MS database server.
