    Winamp usually does a decent job of converting MPEG-1 layer 2 and 3 audio (as well as a lot of other formats) back to WAV files via its "WAVE-out" output plugin (installed by default). I've heard stories by people who use the L.A.M.E. encoder to create MP3s that Winamp's reproduction of audio isn't optimal, but I don't have any proof one way or the other.

      One of the most useful programs I have is Ashampoo's AudioCD MP3 Studio 2000. It can;

      Edit and create playlists
      Read and encode CD's to .MP3
      Read and encode CD's to .WAV's
      Recode .MP3's to .WAV's
      Write .MP3's directly to an audio CD with no intermediate .WAV file
      Write compressed .WAV's that are 4:1 smaller and still compatable with standard players.

      The advantage over freebies is that the interface is very simple, not written for "cuteness", and it works very nicely.

      $20 at Target and several other stores and on the internet.

        I've been using Cdex to rip CDs, convert from mpeg audio to wav and vice versa. It's free on the internet.
