  • Daily IE lockup...

My work machine is a 2.6Ghz Dell P4. It's always on. EVERY morning when I come in, the first time i try to run IE, IE will freeze on me (stop responding) as soon as I launch it. I reboot, and everything is fine.

I'm running XP SP1 with all the updates. I'm also running Style XP, if that matters. Any ideas?

    Hrm. Weird.

What's your home page set to?

Did this behaviour occur after installing one of the security patches of IE? Or after installing SP1 or another patch?
          Main: Dual Xeon LV2.4Ghz@3.1Ghz | 3X21" | NVidia 6800 | 2Gb DDR | SCSI
          Second: Dual PIII 1GHz | 21" Monitor | G200MMS + Quadro 2 Pro | 512MB ECC SDRAM | SCSI
          Third: Apple G4 450Mhz | 21" Monitor | Radeon 8500 | 1,5Gb SDRAM | SCSI

Possibly. The PC is fairly new, and I have installed a lot of the security updates...

P.S. This is most likely a power saving issue... returning from standby. Try hibernate instead... or check for a BIOS update.

The only power saving i use is "turn off monitor after 20 mins"

LOL, thanks. Nah, in general I have pretty good luck with hardware, etc. But, we have had quite a few probs with this batch of Dells we got.

As for my other issue of computers not "unlocking" out of windows properly, I've seen that with quite a few machines.

At least he wouldn't have to reboot just to browse the net

                        Waking up the PC

                        K

How soon after waking up the pc do you try to use it???

i leave mine on all the time also, but i wait a couple of minuets after waking it up before using it.

check to see if the power management in the bios is configured for S3(...which is STR). my system did not like this at all...even though it is acpi compliant. also, play with the behaviour of the power button both in windows and the bios(...they should match).

thats' all i can think of at the moment...good luck

You say your pc is always on when you get there?

Do you leave it on, or does someone start them in the morning?

If you can't find the problem in the bios settings etc, do check the start up sequence, if all those machines are turning on at the same time, and hitting the dhcp server etc, there could be a further bug involved.

No Gurm - I just meant use about:mozilla instead of about:blank as a homepage for a change - in IE this gives you a blue blank screen rather than a white one

Chucky: It was indeed on S3 by default. The only other choice was S1, so it's now on that (whatever THAT is).

Sasq: Yeah, it's always on, never goes to sleep etc. I'm the only one who touches this PC.
