  • Cracking a network folder

    Hi all.
I've got a little problem, here...

At the office we spend a bit of money monthly for a fast Internet connection.
But, when we have to use it it's always slow...and I've discovered why.
One of the three boss often use WinMX without a bandwith limit to download during the day...well, what he want to download.

The problem is that I have to find a way to access his Win98 PC to find the file he is downloading and solve the problem in some way. The most important thing is to keep the thing secret, so I have to access his PC without him noticing.

I can't set up a condivision 'cause he'd noticed it and I cannot setup a worm 'cause he has an antivirus.

    Suggestions?

Is there really no other way of stopping him than breaking in to his computer? Couldn't you talk to your other two bosses and explain to them that you have a very real problem with their colleague using up the companys bandwidth for his personal "enjoyment"?

This boss is one of the two founder, and apart from this he is needed here as he is the only one that can work on our customers's AS400.

If I tell about the problem to the main boss, probably the bandwith problem will be solved. After that, I will be fired.

          Not that good solution...

If you have a firewall block the winMX port from there!

Good idea, but the boss will figure that out.

Fortunately, the boss IS running Windows 98...It'd be easier if it were Windows 95, but you have to just figure out how to crash it somehow. Winnuke95 used to work on 95, but they fixed the network vunerability in 98...but there has to be another way to crash it...

You could block the port, then if he says something say inocently that you thought you were blocking a "leak" or something.

If he is a founder then I assume he is also an owner.
If he askes you to un block it, then fine it's his bandwidth to waste.

If he's realy been down loading porn all day, then he won't say a word.

Put him on a 2mbit BNC cable (you need a couple of transceivers but two cheap 10BaseT with BNC _HUBs_ will do the trick -slow him down a bit more, usually the cheapest the hub the slowest...)

Otherwise you'll need to figure out a way to throttle his bandwidth. You can use QoS in win2k server for that (given a/you have one b/you use it for sharing the internet connection).

why not try to achieve the goal by playing the game a bit more politically?

Like complaining about the slow connection speed and mentioning that you suspect that one of your coworkers is running a filesharing program over the internet without bandwidth cap?

if you can tell it without showing any signs that you know it's him, it might work

If he's operating an AS400 one might suspect he knows something about computers so trying 'tricks' on him won't really work.

Try complaining to him about bandwidth problem and ask whether it's possible to augment your connection.
Then let him solve the problem as he sees fit.

How do you hope to prevent this by cracking into his computer?

And can you not access his computer directly, i.e. from the keyboard?

Nope he'll just find another way to sack Drizzt. Probably the best approach is draw him into the problem and lead him to the solution.

I liked dZeus's answer better than my own.
