  • DVD player for VCD/SVCD?

Can a DVD player play VCD/SVCD format films?

  • #2
Depends on the player. Most of the big names won't, but companies like Apex seem to throw all sorts of little goodies in their DVD players.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

I think most play VCD. At least most DVD sold here do. About SVCD I'm not so sure.

My Onkyo DV-S555 does and so should at least the popular pioneer models (don't know the exact version number) as they're based on the same hardware.

You just have to be a bit careful with the used bitrate of SVCD as some players cannot do >2500Bps.
But we named the *dog* Indiana...

Some of the Sonys allow VCD's. Never tested SVCD's though.

Wombat is correct. As strange as it may seem, higher end DVD players seem to have less functions than budget ones. It even used to be the case that budget machines from big name manufacturers didnt do half the stuff that budget players from budget makers did.
Thankfully some of the big names are waking up and giving their players multiple capabilities.

I've got a Toshiba SD220E, which plays DVD, VCD/SVCD, CDR/RWs and MP3s. Its also highly rated by the reviewers.
I can vouch for the DVD, CDR and MP3 playback, but I dont have any VCDs to try .

Have a look here, they've got a database of DVD players which includes their VCD, SVCD capabilites

It is interesting for me because of the Magix Photos on CD/DVD. It can write slide shows in VCD format and show them on TV.

Toshiba SD220E, I'll remeber this. Is there a DVD drive comparable to this?

I was going to recommend Taz's link.

My Pioneer plays damn near everything, but standard VCD's look like crap - I think its MPEG1 algorithm sucks ass. My friend's 5-disc changer (a year newer, a step up, and a changer from mine) plays VCD's much better.

                        Just for the record:

APEX is dropping support for VideoCD but keeping support for SuperVideoCD. Problem is that VCD licensing fees were a cost they didn't want to pass on anymore.

My Apex 1500 has played everything that I put in it. VCD, SVCD, CDR\W, DVD-R\W....

As Doc pointed out future Apex players won't have official support for VCD. Not sure about unofficial support though...

Didn't think anyone really had to have a license for that anymore, wasn't that a format originally found on the Philips CD-I? I know there are Open Source programs to create VCD's.

As a side note, my Sony DVD player will play VCD's (I have a few) but only if they're on CD's that the player will read. CD-RW's work flawlessly though. I just want to upgrade to a progressive scan one

                              Hooray for no-name brands...

Just bought an AudioLogic ADV802PS DVD player which has Progressive Scan and plays EVERYTHING, including miniDVD (15 minutes or so of DVD quality on Cds burned with a Cd-writer.) $149(Cdn) which is about $25(US).The Canadian price is correct but I'm only joking with my conversion into US dollars.
