  • APEX dropping VCD support.....

Got a note from Colton Manley at APEX today. Here's the skinny.

VideoCD support will gone in their upcoming decks. 3/C wants $4.00 per deck in license fees to include it in their DVD players. APEX feels that VideoCD isn't popular enough in the North American market to continue supporting it given the percentage of their end price this represents.

SuperVideoCD stays because it's an open standard with no license fees.

They are working with Microsoft to include WindowsMedia Video in their decks

Their current deckis already support Windows Media Audio.

I was personally never interested in VCD's. After experimenting a bit I was so disappointed by the quality that I decided to skip a technology I thought to be interim.

I wish that manufacturers would just MAKE all new DVD players work with DVD+R and DVD-R discs.
