Are you joking when you say Win 3.11 as apart from the fact it isn't a proper OS and then there is the little problem that it wouldn't run any of that hardware to it's full potential

I want the fastest damn processing machine on this planet! Just to crack that one encrypted zip file I have.

I don't care about the video card or anything like that, I just want to be able to do trillions upon trillions of calculations in a few nanoseconds!

That's my extreme machine.

My cerebral cortex ain't functioning right today. I've been lacking sleep for a week and my calculations would be all wrong, plus I'd probably end up bashing my keyboard on something out of random frustration.

Re: What's your <extreme> dream machine ?

Motherboard: Tyan S2466Tiger MPX $ 349.00
Mem: 4x 512MB DDR PC2700 Trancsend 333MHz $ 160.00 (each)

Total: $ 32,829.00
Your RAM will be incompatible with your mobo (the S2466 only supports PC2100, not PC2700). Plus, it comes with a NIC on-board, so unless you need 2 NIC's, the 2nd one is quite unnesecary. Also, your paying too much.

I use 4 vendors for all my computing needs.
Crucial for my RAM, PcMods for my computer case, NewEgg.com for most of my PC hardware, and TheNerds.net for the stuff that NewEgg doesn't carry. The service and prices (and delivery times) for all 3 vendors are top notch.

My machine here (and this is an actual machine, sitting on my desk), is:

Tyan S2466-4M ($195)
2x Athlon MP1800+ CPU's ($145 each) with CoolerMaster HHC-001 fans ($26 each) (and a CoolerMaster thermal kit ($6) for between the fan and the CPUs)
2x 512mb PC2100 DDR ECC RAM ($174 each)
Lian-Li PC68-USB case ($177) with:
Clear square window in the side with translucent molding ($19) and a radiation applique ($10).
Blowhole cut in the top w/Biohazard Grill ($17).
Ultraviolet internal light ($30).
Rounded Floppy, IDE and SCSI cables ($14).
8cm ($7) and 12cm ($13) Enermax fans (for rear and top blowholes).
Enermax 430w PS ($83).
DigitalDoc 5 ($49).
Matrox Parhelia 128m Bulk ($332).
Klipsh ProMedia 5.1 THX Speakers ($364)
Hauppauge WinTV-Radio ($87).
Adaptec DuoConnect (USB2 and IEEE1394) ($78).
3x ViewSonic P95f+b monitors ($305 each).
Logitech Freedom Optical Pro Wireless mouse & keyboard ($76).

Now, I already had (but I've included prices if you wanted to purchase them):
SB Live! card ($34).
1.44" Drive ($8).
IDE 20gb HDD ($60).
AdvanSys SCSI card ($17).
SCSI DVD Drive ($92).
SCSI Burner ($166).
2nd 3COM 3x905 NIC ($37).

So, all up my computer cost me $3162, and if I'd needed to buy the other parts, it would have cost me $3576 (mind you, I probably would have just gone with an IDE cd-rom/burner if I didnt already have them, which is cheaper still). Not so bad for a triple head dual athlon MP machine with all the trimmings. This PC was built in August, so some of the prices would have come down by now (for example, the memory).

I also built an Athlon XP1800+ with 512mb RAM and a GeForce4 Ti4200 up for my wife, which was much cheaper to build than my own box. In her case, the only thing I didnt need to buy was a monitor and a hard disk, everything else is completely new. I also made sure she had firewire and USB2 aswell.

So a new computer, even a top of the line one, doesnt need to cost tens of thousands of dollars ... hell, if I didnt go for 3 heads on my machine, I would have been under $2.5k still. Just look online for the places with a good price, and then check out places like BizRate, and other places that rate businesses, and check out which ones are highly rated, and then work out your right balance of good ratings vs. cheap price. Thats how I came up with TheNerds.net (the other 3 vendors were recommended to me by friends, and some research told me they were a good choice).

Enjoy
PreZ

Dual Athlon MP1800+, Tyan S2466-4M, 2x512mb DDR PC2100, Matrox Parhelia 128mb, 3x ViewSonic P95f+b monitors, AdvanSys SCSI card w/CD burner and DVD drive, 20gb Linux + 9gb Win2000 HDDs, SB Live!, Adaptec DuoConnect (FireWire + USB2.0), Hauppauge WinTV-Radio.
