  • dvd-r external query

I`ve just puchased a Pioneer 104 and I`m thinking of putting it in an external case and connecting it via firewire. (so I can use it on my laptop and PC) At the moment I`ve got a scsi case that has its own power supply which is about five years old but unused. What I am looking for is an IDE to Firewire interface/cable. Does such a cable exist and if so where can I get hold of one?
If not, where`s the cheapest I can get a ready-made external firewire drive enclosure?
Are there any bad points in using this setup ?
    TIA Disastermaster.

Ps I am in the UK

    Hi

Check out for the ADS Firewire Drive kit at www.lynxdv.com, I use my Pioneer A03 in one of these with great success on a couple of computers.

Unfortunately they are currently out of stock

    Regards

I have one of these http://www.rlsupplies.co.uk/item1143.htm

I haven't used it with my 104, but have used it sucessfully with external IDE hard drives and CD writers.

I did have a few problems as some software couldn't see the writer. Nero could for example, but FireBurner couldn't. The other problem I had was with a DVD-ROM as the system just saw it as another removable drive and not specifically a DVD, so I couldn't play CSS encrypted DVD's as the drive and software could do the necessary key exchanges.

I don't know if other external cases/interfaces suffer from the same limitations?

        External Ide to firewire cnvrtr

You may want to check these folks out http://www.caloptic.com. They have both a standalone device which will convert any ide drive to firewire and they also have cases with firewire and / or usb I/O. I have both. One I use for an extra hard drive to xport between Mac / PC (video) and the other as a burner for my laptop. ONE caution the older Pioneer A03 is to long for their case, the A104 (A04) is fine. A Plextor 12/10/32a is also to long. The newer drives have a shorter footprint. I did like you and modified an old scsii case. I have know affiliation with these folks but am a happy camper and their tech support is great as well. Oh one other tidbit. I use my Pioneer with a Liteon DVD reader and their DVD controller for DVD copying. NO, It will not defeat Macrovision.

Also you could try these people (in the UK) if you are looking for an 'internal adapter'. They are not the cheapest in the world, but....
