• How does G400 perform on a fast rig?

I'm just plain curious.

I know some of you are running G400s with this year's systems so I would just like to know how fast it performs in games.

What's the highest 3Dmark2001SE G400 score? I know 3Dmark is innaccurate but it should give rough ballpark assessment.

What are your framerates in Q3 and Unreal?

Edit: Spelling

you want to hear the brutal truth in one word? SLOW

i think the g400 stops to scale at ~900mhz

no that is not true, g400 scales pretty good, i think it stops at 1,2GHz.
i have used g400max with celeron clocked at 953Mhz in Abit bh6 and got ~1400 3dmarks2001se (1024x768x32bit), now i use modded Celeron 1300@1460 Mhz (tualatin core) in Abit BH6 and get with same settings as before about ~1700 3dmarks2001 se, and yes this +21 percent are feelable in playing games, e.g. jedi knight 2 runs much smoother now at 800x600x32 with nearly maximum details (only texture size is 75% of maximum)

The G400 should scale pretty damn well into the Ghz processors. I've got an old G200 marvel PCI that just keeps going up in 3dmarks as I put a faster processor in. (Low detail, but you knew that already didn't you? )

I wonder how a parhelia would scale...
This sig is a shameless atempt to make my post look bigger.

Right, someone just donate me a parhelia and the keys to a server farm and I'll get right back to ya

Right, just a quick update on the G200 marvel PCI, got me 900 3dmarks with a PIII 1Ghz, and got me 1700 3dmarks with a P4 1.8Ghz. Both with 1GB RAM. (Not that that'll do much in 3dmark ) Low detail, but you can see more or less what I mean when I say it scales pretty well.

Especially considering how old the tech is.

I know some of you are running G400s with this year's systems so I would just like to know how fast it performs in games.

Old machine: dual P3/850MHz, 512MB PC100 CAS2 RAM, i440BX chipset.

New machine: dual 2.0GHz Xeon, 1024MB PC800 RDRAM, i860 chipset.

Operating systems in both machines: primary=Linux, secondary=Win2K. Latest Matrox drivers used on both machines and on both OSs.

On my old machine I drove the G400MAX at AGP2. On my new machine I drive it at AGP4.

Games played under both OSs on both machines: Q3A and RtCW. Games played under Linux on both machines: TuxRacer (retail version). I play all these games at 800x600x32bpp on a 12??x1024x32bpp desktop.

I kept my G400MAX for use in the new machine because I planned to get a Parhelia and there were not any Linux/XFree86 driver for it yet. Thus I have had 2 months of experience with the G400MAX on my new machine after several years experience on my old machine.

The 3D gaming performance differences, both benchmarked and subjective, can be summed up in one word: none. Ok, here's a second word: whatsoever. I haven't run any contrived benchmarks on the two machine; I just care about the software that I actually run.

I run games at 800x600x32bpp because 640x480 is too jaggy; the G400MAX would probably catch on fire at 1024x768. The framerate is greatly improved by running the above games at 16bpp, but I can't say if there is any relative difference between old and new machines because I haven't tried 16bpp on the new machine.

One more thing: I do not overclock any system components, including the G400MAX, and never have.

I still hope to get a Parhelia, but with uncertain compatibility between the card and the i860 chipset that may not happen. There's also the issue of 3D support in my primary OS, Linux/XFree86, but that's another topic.

Hope this helps.

And I think that is because G400 doesn't fully support DX8 so you are like benchmarking your CPU rather than the card itself since everything is done is software.

EDIT: try using 3DMARK99 (DX6) and you should see the truth.

I get about 2058 with my MAX Oc'd to 170/226 and an Athlon xp 1600 @ 1686
When I was still a kid, my parents got me a Packard Bell. I've never been happier. Now it's degraded to a foot support.

I got 600 3DMarks with my G400 16 SH PII@467 512MBPC133CAS2.

With MX 220/220 I got about 1600-1700.

Neomagic your scores in 3DMark games are about 2× of my scores.

Yeah well 3dmark is quite dependent on a fast fsb, and since mine is at 160 it does make a difference. Before I got about 1777 on my t-bird at 1.4 or so.

Yours is bottlenecked by cpu for sure.

Actually, my G400max scales pretty damn well, IMHO.

With my system running a Duron 800 @1007 (106fsb) I got a 3dMark2000 score of about 3600 @800x600x16
Last night I upgraded the CPU to an Athlon XP1600, wound the FSB up to 145 and scored 4880.

My FPS in DungeonSiege also jumped from a minimum of 13 to a minimum of 19.

I shall try 3dMark2002 tonight.

Not that my cpu is fast or anything but I'm getting around 1500 with 3dmark build 330.

It was slightly faster with the 5.82 drivers than with the 5.86 that I'm using now.
