View Full Version : Terrorist attack halted or just slowed down?

Three men, one of which who appeard to be muslims (one bearded with a Kufi; one of those knit caps), were discussing what observers took as plans for a terrorist attack at a Georgia Shoneys restaurant.

Their cars had Illinois plates and they were headed in the direction of Ft. Lauderdale (Disney World??) along what is known as Alligator Alley; an east/west portion of I-75.

An area alert was issued after police were alerted by other customers. They were just arrested after blowing through a toolbooth.

Bomb sniffing dogs found signs of explosives or accelerants and the locals & Feds have robots inspecting their cars.

Here's the story as it appears on Comcast.net news page.

Terror Threat Closes Fla. Highway

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) - Officials shut down Alligator Alley, the main east-west highway across the Everglades, and people in two vehicles were detained after a possible terrorist threat, police said.

Bomb-sniffing dogs alerted authorities to material in both vehicles, said E.J. Picolo of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Explosive charges were used to blast open what appeared to be a backpack taken from one of the vehicles.

``The information we have is very specific,'' Picolo said.

He said the three people in the vehicles had not been arrested, but were being detained.

The Florida Highway Patrol shut down a 20-mile stretch of Interstate 75 shortly after 1 a.m., when the vehicles were stopped. It was still closed more than six hours later.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation had issued an advisory for the cars Thursday after a waitress in Calhoun, Ga., in the northwestern part of that state, told police she overheard three men of Middle Eastern descent discussing terrorist plans Wednesday night.

The Georgia woman said the men were talking about amounts of explosives and warned that Americans would ``cry on 9/13,'' said Miami Police Lt. Bill Schwartz, quoting from the Georgia advisory.

Alligator Alley is the main road from Naples to Fort Lauderdale across the Everglades in South Florida.

The highway patrol said the road was blocked off from a toll booth east of Naples to State Road 29.

Don't they know that you don't want to piss off Americans. The British did back on March 5, 1770 and we see where that went. :D

Updated reports of their conversation now sound like there were others involved.

Some reports are now coming out that police have found a detonating device in one of the cars.....

INS reports that all 3 are legal resident aliens. All 3 are young males of about 25 years.

Plates on one car registered to a Chicago address. A couple was picked up at that address and reports are that after interviewing them the law enforcement agencies left in a big hurry to another undisclosed location.....

The brother of one member of the couple is not at his home address and is being searched for.

still developing.....

Now....can you imagine the s***storm if these are Iraqi's ??

What dumbasses! If you were going to blow something up, the last thing you should do is blab about it in public. I guess any idiot can be a terrorist...

MadScot

PS If they turn out to be Iraqi, doenst it smell of a set up? The already bountiful conspiracy-theorists would have a field day...

From Fox News:

Officials blew up a suspicious package and detained three men along Florida's Alligator Alley Friday morning after an all-night search for two vehicles thought to be involved in possible terrorist activity.

CNN already said that the suspicious package turned out to be medical equipment (but hey, it had a wire coming out of it).

LONDON, England (CNN) -- On the day Americans mourned the victims of the September 11 attacks, one of Britain's leading Muslim extremist groups met and issued warnings to the United States.

In a mosque in London's Finsbury Park, with banners outside proclaiming: "Islam is the future for Britain," three radical Muslim clerics -- Sheikh Abu Hanza, Omar Bakri Mohammad, and Muhammed al Masseri -- held a three-hour closed-door session.

Afterwards, the clerics told reporters the United States has to suffer much more to learn "obedience."

They were talking out their arseholes too... and they most certianly have the US Goverments attention (not to mention England's)

Regardless of what they are, students, terrorists or fools, forget legal or not have pulled very stoopid way of drawing attraction to their cause and to themselves.

Now they're saying that our 3 Floridian friends were "joking" and having "fun" with the woman who reported their antics.

Maybe now they'll re-think their methods of attempting "humor", especially in light of how short everyone's fuses are in the US of late

They still could face charges in the false plate and making a terrorist threat.

Theoretically we are all potential terrorists, seems like everybody is going overboard with this terrorist thing. Just look at the article below.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) A flight bound for New York was diverted to Philadelphia under military escort Thursday night after an ill woman stood up to use the bathroom, violating new security rules put in place for the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The National Airlines flight from Las Vegas landed safely at around 6 p.m. EDT after being escorted to Philadelphia International Airport by military jets.

Police evacuated the Boeing 757 on the tarmac, but investigators quickly determined that the 43-year-old woman posed no threat, authorities said. Federal authorities said her intentions had initially been unclear because she spoke limited English.

''The woman is receiving medical treatment. There was no terrorism involved. There was no plot, and she is not in custody,'' said FBI special agent Joseph Majarowitz.

A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said the plane was diverted because of new regulations that took effect at 7 a.m. on Sept. 11, barring passengers flying into New York from leaving their seats once the plane is within 30 minutes of the city.

As the plane was nearing John F. Kennedy International Airport, the woman felt as though she had to vomit and left her seat to use the bathroom.

I though this is why they had sick bags in the first place on airplanes.

Anybody who chooses terrorism must certainly have a screw loose, however most people who have a screw loose are also unfortunately very crafty. If all terrorists weren't too bright, more than likely most of this stuff wouldn't have happened.

But let's not get going in this thread like the one that got closed. It was starting to sound like a normal day at the UN....

well i can certainly understand that the people in the US dont want do see 9/11 happen again. but i think the government is overreacting a bit.

there was a similar situation in germany about two weeks ago: it was reported that a radical muslim with connections to al-qaida and his girlfirend (from the US) where arrested as they planned a attack on the US military base in heidelberg with 130kg of explosives. in the end they found out that the guy wasn't even a real muslim and that he only possesed 270g gun powder.

As far as these guys go they were obviously talking trash and wandered into turf that scared more than just one person in that restaurant.

As far as the authorities goes their comment "better safe than sorry" works for me. I can just imagine the s***storm if they had ignored them and these guys had blown the Epcot Center or the like

Now...regarding the German incident. Bear with me a bit as I am a reloader & familiar with gunpowders.

270g = about .5 pounds = 3500 grains (the unit used to measure gunpowder charges)

If we're talking about smokeless gunpowder as used in modern arms this is enough to load 100 or more rounds of .30 caiber ammunition.

It's also more than enough to make several pipe bombs given that very little of it is actually necessary, especially if one of the fastest burning types are used. These can easily produce pressures of over 50,000 PSI.

Put a small charge in a scored metal pipe and you have a very effective fragmentation grenade. Several of these could decimate the populace in a market or other public place.

If it was black gunpowder it's still a dangerous amount. I can remember being a kid on the farm and using about that amount to blow tree stumps when we were clearing fields. Add some fertilizer and some ******** as a secondary charge and you had a powerful explosive capable of blasting solid rock.

.5 lb is more than enough for two decent sized pipe bombs and more if you do the noted "enhancement".

I for one would certainly not take the "small" amount found as indicative of innocent intent.

...and many more rounds for a MAC 10 or an Uzi, or plenty of letter bombs, but how did the original amounts reported get 1,000% bloated, unless someone wanted to create an international scare? The difference between barrels and baggies is obvious to any idiot...

it was black gunpowder.

Actually, like Dr. Mordid pointed out, there are many many potential explosives around us.

To make a bomb you don't need gun poweder, C4, TNT or anything like that. Some of the chemicals found in any supermarket and gardening shop can be used to create some stable and very effective explosives.

Dr Mordrid
15th September 2002, 04:32
Yup. Long ago in an earlier and more adventureous life :D I learned how to make a C4 analog using petroleum jelly and items found in any decent pharmacy (Walgrens etc.). It worked pretty damned good for blowing tree stumps in one of our bean fields.

Another interesting one is picric acid, which is usable as either a primer charge (in very tiny amounts) or as a very powerful main charge. It was at one time used as a main charge in torpedos.

Source: either an analgesic or a certain vegetable dye
