  • Ut2003 build 927 + Matrox

I had an enjoyable lan party this weekend at my house, the only thing my friend got hold of the very excellent unreal tournament 2003 beta build 927, and my Parhelia had alot of trouble running it , bad stuttering on all of the levels

    My machine spec is

    XP 1600+
    256mb
    20gb IBM
    Parhelia 128mb *latest drivers

I had everything on full detail 1024x768

my friends specs are the same processor and memory just that 2 have radeon 8500`s and on Ti500 and they all had very good sustainable frame rates

Has anyone else played this beta with a parhelia?

unreal is very important to me so if the parheilia cant even run ut2003 properly it may have to go for an ATI/Nv again :[

As far as I know, the beta version of UT2003 is much less optimized than the finished version...I had similar problems with SOF2 on my old GeForce2, the beta worked terribly, while on a friend's Radeon it was OK...the final version however worked fine on my GeForce as well...so wait for the final UT2003 before jumping to conclusions.
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

This is probably true since they claim that the final version should work with even a TNT2 card. I found that the beta stuttered noticeably on my system as well using a GF3 ti200, but most of it went away when I added another 256MB RAM. If the retail version still gives you problems, you should try more ram before buying a different video card.

It ran pretty well on mine and I have a MUCH lesser system than you (Pentium 3 850mhz) Hell, I don't even have the right Spec PSU. Mine is only a 250w powersupply.

              Hmm,

              Bad stuttering, Huh!

I too have the 927 build beta, and it runs better on my PArhelia, then on my GeForce 4200, running at 300/650!
It still stutters, but look! That's you HDD light on all the time. Hmm, maybe you need more RAM in your PC, as already stated. I am adding another 256MB today, and will update you after that.

Hey, how do you know that Unicron and Yxalitis aren't official UT2003 beta testers?

Running the game in 16-bit colour will help memory problems enourmously.

From experience with the original UT you only got good performance running in 32-bit colour when you had mem => 320meg on NT based systems. Otherwise you'ed swap to the hard disc far too much.

                        Quick Ass PC!

OK, I now have 512 MB of PC1066Mhz RDRAM
And it makes huge difference to UT2003. Games run smooth as sik...
                        Except for Gestalt!
That level is a real hog, ran like a one legged dog in treacle. This may be a broken level, it is that bad! If not, then Ladies and Gentlemen, the Parhelia is too slow for this game! Haven;t swapped out to my Geforce yet, may do that to compare.
Does anyone know how to get FPS displayed in the beta?

Keep in mind that it isn't the final, so it's not optimized!

Sure. Hit your < tab > key while in the game, then type stat fps. That'll cause it to display the current / average fps in the upper / middle right side of the screen as you play.

                            FPS for UT2003

OK, just ran the FRAPS thingy (Didn't get to read the above response until now!)
Most levels run comfortably at about 40 -45 FPS, larger, outdoor levels, (Like that one with all the snow falling, can't remember it's name) 30-ish. This is 1024 with FAA on, all details set to high, max, shadows etc, by the way.
Gestalt: 20 to start with, then it plummets to 9 or so! Funny enough, it does this in a very smooth way, it isn't jerky, more like slow motion. Must be an optimisation thing. Doesn't matter, it's a dog-ugly level anyway!

                              Yxalitis:
Those results sounds pretty good actually, especially when you're using FAA. My GF4 is getting around 60 most places, with dips into the mid 30's in a few. I don't know what my results are for Gestalt yet, but I'll try it now and report back. BTW, my scores are without any AA. (Kudos to Matrox yet again for the FAA feature).
