  • Which brand name laptop would you recommend?

I need to buy a new laptop for work. I have been told to get a Dell, Toshiba or Gateway. I am also looking at HP and Fujistsu.

I was just wondering of anyone out there may have any recommendations.

    Thanks much.

Sony and Apple look the coolest.
Toshiba is good and good value for money, though they use some proprietry components.

I would suggest you not to buy Gateway, their stores are closing down slowly... (which is worrying) And they are dead outside America.

Ever considered IBM? X series looks quite tempting.

before making any recommendations perhaps you could say if you want portability in preference to desktop replacement & what exactly you'll be using it for!

Yeah, it really depends. IBM makes great laptops, but they're pricey and heavy.

Sony makes light and portable, but not necessarily the best kit.

Dell is excellent all - around, but you do need to tell us what you want in it.

Dell - My #1 recommendation. They make solid, fast, well built laptops.

Sony - Good laptops, expensive as all hell though. I don't like buying from Sony because their support sucks @$$.

Toshiba - 90%+ of the laptops at my work are Toshiba (which is several thousand). Toshiba's quality control and designs has really, really, really sucked lately. I cannot honestly recommend Toshiba, until they can prove that they can fix their design and QA problems.

Gateway - With Gateway you have a 50/50 chance of either getting an incredible computer or a pile of $#!%. If you're a gambling man, go for it.

HP & Fujitsu - Not familiar enough with those brands to make recommendations.

                Portability = Yes
                Wireless network capability = Yes
would like a 15" screen. It would be better for my poor eyes.

Mainly this will be for wordprocessing, database, spreadsheet and so on. It will not be placed in one set location. However wieght is not an issue. There will be no games on this. It does not need to be the fastest thing around. But memory will be important as I will have several apps open at once.

Currently I am leaning towards the HP that has a Athlon 1400, 256 megs and a 15" screen.

And one last important thing. They have told me to only spend about 1500 bucks. So Sony is out of the question.

One last thing. I hate having the mouse in the middle of the keyboard. So unless IBM has changed, they are out of the question.

Hey if it is not gonna sit in a static place then make sure it looks cool!!

Thats my #1 requirement for laptops.

And, choose those with MOBILE cpu instead of DESKTOP cpu whenever you can.
