View Full Version : M. Night Shyamalan's "Signs"

M. Night Shyamalan crafts an intelligent and emotional extension of the "are we alone?" genre.

No heavy-handed effects shots, so Independence Day it isn't. What it does have is something you don't see much anymore: character development, evolution and redemption in a sci-fi context.

Mel Gibson gives a very good characterization of an Episcopal Priest who has lost his faith, much to the detriment of his family, while Joaquin Phoenix does quite well as his live-in brother.

Add two well acted kids, the family dogs, some peripheral characters, some tin foil ( ) and a script that throws in some creeps as the whole world goes to s**t around them.

Can't say much more without ruining things :D

But does it have an MNS "twist" ending?

please. no spoilers, or if you MUST post them, clearly mark them, or better yet, write them in the same color the background has, so that in order to read them, one must highlight them :)

Movies aren't released in germany when they're released in the US. Minority Report, for instance, is scheduled for october (!!)

Well not as bad as 6th Sense...all I can say now. I just got back from seeing with the GF and it was pretty good I thought...kept his style of keeping an reoccuring theme in the movie and how it plays out :)

I haven't seen it, but they wife said it was just ok.

MNS is currently batting 50% in my book.

6th Sense was horrible

Unbreakable was really good.

I like M. Night Shyamalan's style, I won two of his movies already on DVD, and will see this one too.

Thanks Doc.

6th Sense "horrible"??

Yougottabefreakinkidding!!??

I agree about Unbreakable though. One of my favorites.

OTOH the first thing my wife said as we left the theater from Signs was "We just *have* to get this one on DVD......"

Just saw Signs last night. I really enjoyed it. It's got the MNS style, without the 'super-secret'shocking' ending. But he's been saying for a long time that his next movie wouldn't have one.

All the actors did a great job, the story was very well done. I especially loved the ambience of the movie, and the ambient audio track. Top notch!

Yep, just saw it last nite. Kinda creepy, gave the wifey nitemares.

and I would have to agree with Electric Amish on his assesment as well. I thought I was the only one who thought 6th sense relied on its ending to make the movie.

Overall "Signs" was quite good. The one scene in the birthday party creeped me out but good.

Definitely gave the wife nightmares. She was so freaked out that she spilled her popcorn EVERYWHERE, multiple times.
