  • Parhelia Reef Demo & FRAPS

(All FPS, sampled every second using FRAPS)

    Min: 24
    Max: 49
    Mean: 34.5
    Std. Dev.: 5.3

Well, I decided to set FRAPS going and just let the Reef Demo start and go (1024x768; 16xFAA) for 3 or 4 minutes.

How does this compare with other people? It looks absolutely gorgeous!

      Sorry, forgot those!

Athlon 1.4 @ 1.15 (underclocked, I know - don't ask, it's a long story - the multiplier is all messed up), 512Mb 2100 DDR RAM, Audigy, 30G HDD, etc etc etc running Win2k SP2 that is probably ready for a reinstall.

Anyone else get a hiccup when the sound loop restarts?

Yeah - and I'm running XP and a Sonic Fury so it ain't sound card specific. Just a simple coding problem.

Damn shame really, 'cas the the only noticeable blemish the demo - and it's easily the best looking demo I've ever seen.

That reminds me, checkout http://theproduct.de/ with a new 64k demo called poemtoahorse. Much better than fr-08 except from the soundtrack - its more chilled this time. Is it me, or does this little 64k demo do a better job than 3DMark2001 for the most part?

does the reef demo run in gigacolor or 32bit?

As its a Matrox tech demo, I'd say it's gigacolour.

But I thought this was a changeable option in the config? I'm @ work so can't check...

A Gigacolour option is not in the reef demo config.

Or were you thinking about the Powerdesk swtich?

I would guess that the reef demo, being the official techdemo, can enable gigacolor by itself, I mean it is gigacolor aware.
when you select 32bit color, do you then FORCE gigacolor off, or can apps(like the reef demo) enable it? is gigacolor completely disabled, or is it "application decides" disabled?

BTW that fr19 demo is pretty amazing!

it seems to be pushing my kyro2 to the limit with that huge polycount, it runs "ok", but not smooth.

I still like fr08 better though, fr19 is too abstract for my taste, and the music in fr08 is better IMO, it is still technoligical impressive though.

I am going to give the fr19 demo a go tonight.

Maggi - do you know those guys are working on? I bet they had very little trouble getting a job!

fr19 is impressive. but why oh why do all good demos get ruined by cheesy techno or trance?

the speeds aren't bad of that reef demo and you underclocked your cpu.
I would like to see other benchmarks results on a faster cpu, just to see if it matters alot

Thop: In the case of the fr-08 and fr-19 demos, one of the reasons surely is that space was one of the main concrens, and simple techno "music" can easily be done by a midi-like system, which is then sampled in real-time. Another reason would be that it kinda fits the trippy looks of those demos. Oh, and computer geeks have no taste
