  • It's the end of the world

OK folks <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/2147879.stm">we got 17 years left</a>, make the most of it.

An asteroid discovered just weeks ago has become the most threatening object yet detected in space.

A preliminary orbit suggests that 2002 NT7 is on an impact course with Earth and could strike the planet on 1 February, 2019 - although the uncertainties are large.

Astronomers have given the object a rating on the so-called Palermo technical scale of threat of 0.06, making NT7 the first object to be given a positive value.

From its brightness, astronomers estimate it is about two kilometres wide, large enough to cause continent-wide devastation on Earth.

              That's OK.....

Object 2002 NY40 is supposed to come within 0.003518 AU (~300,000 miles) on August 9th this year.

IF someone dropped a decimal point in their calculations it could be a lot closer.

So if one AU is the distance from Earth to the Sun (iirc), that puts NY40 just the other side of the moon's orbit! I wonder if it could have an effect on tides etc?

                  T.

[edit: distance confirmed by edit to Doc's post - eek!]

Not with that small a mass. What's more problematic is the position of the moon itself during the flyby.

If it's closer than expected and the moon is in the right point of its orbit the moons gravity could slingshot the rock straight for us.

Lots of ifs, but it only has to happen once

Perhaps we should have a poll for the best place for it too land or is that too sick??

Crashing into the moon would give us something quite cool to look at!
