Initially with the core at 240 3DMark would randomly lock up. I added a case fan to my system and now it runs happily, although at 250 I don't get very far before it locks up, some more serious cooling needed for that.

It dosn't look like it scales that good in 3DMark.. It hasn't changed as much as SharkMark did...

- Yeah thats what i was thinking too. Oh well, its just 3DMark ;) . -

Now seeing 3DMark is out of the way, how bout an actuall game Ant? If you have time, and are willing. I think either, Quake 3, RTCW, JKII or MOH:AA(Medal of Honour) would be nice games to test with. -

Edit: And even America's Army might be a good game. If you happen to have the UT2003 Performance Test, that would be more then welcome :) . -

that is all q3, an old engine. isn't there anything out there with quad texturing support?

Also, serious sam would be nice to test fillrates. just start the game, config it, pull down the console and type 'benchmark' and the numbers will roll out. not a long test, not a lot of work.

Typing in benchmark didn't work for me. I had to type in \dem_bProfile=1

Map = Valley of the Jaguar
Desktop = 3072x768@32
Pdesk settings - default
Game settings = 1024x768, Quad texturing, tri-linear, left all else at default

Originally recorded = 43.6fps ave
Without excessive peaks = 44.0 fps ave
High Peak = 131.2 fps
Low Peak = 26.0 fps
High Sustained = 108.9 fps

Asus A7V333
512m PC2700 ddr 333
P bulk clocks
CD driver

Using bi linear and Quad gave a boost of 4 fps.

Haig,

I believe that you need to type benchmark() in Serious Sam /(SE) to get fill rate/triangle throughput

Sorry about that, i just typed bench and pressed Tab, so it auto completed.

Ant: I haven't noticed that you opened a new thread. I was just waiting and waiting for results... :D Anyway thanx very much for posting these tables.
The not so big boost in 3dmark overall scores doesn't bother me too much as I don't know how much are the different test results in 3dmark weighted and summarized into the final score.
What I'd like to mention here:
-shaders' performance grows almost linearly with speed
-am I right that multitexture fillrate beats theoretical max of the r300(8x325=2600Mtexels/s)?
A doom3 result would be quite interesting to see.

So OC'ing the momeory really does make a difference after all, even after the whole "we have a 256 bit bus so it doesn't matter" argument. Intersting.

I notice in your screenshot that, in SS:EE, it says "matching * (unrecognized 3d accelerator)", and one of the strong points of the 3d-engine is that it can optimize settings for the 3d-accelerator.
so perhaps the settings isnīt the most optimized ones, does it even autodetect quadtexturing?
is there a difference in speed, normal and quality setting at all?
I think the next patch for serious sam, will give parhelia a HUUGE boost in performance.

Haig
25th July 2002, 07:10
Yes Quad texturing was selected by default.

I think that if these guys do a P detect and apply optimal settings, you'll see the ini in their GLsettings directory.

is there a difference in speed, normal and quality setting at all?

What settings do you want changed from the default?

TdB
25th July 2002, 07:38
Well, i just had the impression that the optimal settings, was hardcoded by the programmers to some extent, and since the newest SS:SE version is older than the parhelia, it would have some unoptimized settings.

AFAIK these "speed/normal/quality-settings differs from card to card(example: matrox g400 quality-settings, has billinear filtering enabled, but kyro2 quality-settings has trilinear filtering enabled, and parhelia quality-settings might have anisotropic filtering enabled, then again it might not, I wouldnīt know unless somebody told me), so I wouldnīt know what settings you had anyway, without seeing it myself.
I do prefer "quality"-settings though, and i would like to see some 1024*768*32 benches with 16xfaa. and please include a screenshot, so that i can see what "quality"-settings looks like on a parhelia, a framerate number doesnīt tell the whole story, with that 3d-engine.

I always felt that serious sam, is a bad benchmark for comparing different cards, because it either uses some standard-settings no-one in their right mind would use, or it has gpu-dependent settings, that might provide optimal settings, but canīt be used when comparing cards.
But i like the game alot and would like to know how it runs on my (hopefully soon arriving) parhelia. :)

Here are some snaps. Don't think it's the best place in the map but it was the only place where I wasn't being attacked to much.

The one with no faa and no aniso has a lot of jaggies on the top of the mountain but the pic doesn't show it that much.

FAA is really great on Serious Sam SE! By accident I ran the game in 640x480 and it still looked good because of the 16xFAA, but also in 1024x768 it works very good.:)

also thanks for showing the settings!

it looks really great, I hope my parhelia arrives soon! :)

Could you or someone else post a screenshot in 640x480 w/ 16xFAA. I'm curious to see how the image looks compared to a higher resolution w/o 16xFAA.

Please note that I used almost the highest Fireworks export setting for jpg (95) for both screenies to make sure that the quality is good.

Could anyone make a screenshot of a wall, with and without anisotropic filtering on.

Serious Sam 2 has truly one of the best texture engines , I mean they look SO good even if you look really close. I never saw that in another game

Ant, those results when overclocking aren't really impressive, look to me that the drivers are fully optimized yet, or there is some other limiting "thing" in 3dmark
