  • Sound card started sounding bad!!!

Well, my wifes sound card started sounding bad playing mp3s and wavs (not midi) suddenly.
She has a Turtle Beach Monterey.
So, I changed out the speakers- nope
    Installed latest drivers - nope
    Re-installed DX8.1 - nope
Dumped a bunch of CODECs - nope
Changed PCI slot and IRQs - nope
Took the card out and put in a spare SB16 - nope
    Same F***ing problem.
All the bass notes sound totaly corrupted.

    Any ideas appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Chuck

Put new batteries in your hearing aide.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

What are you using to play the files? Sounds like the player is running some kind of filter.

            The Plot Thickens

            Well, the plot thickens!
Realplayer and Mplayer2 (windows original) both play the formats fine.
            It's only MediaPlayer 7.1
            That's what she likes though.
            What could cause this?

If you has had bad sound in all prigrams then I would have su8ggested to test a new PSU...

But now thats it only WMP7.1 that does it, could be the individual filter settings....

                Are filter settings adjustable?
                Where do I find them?

Also check the digital playback settings!

                    Erm...
                    Umm...

By any chance do you have a 3Com nic? And/or did you run the windows update and install new drivers for that NIC?

Turn down the volume on the actual media player. Down to say 20% or maybe a bit less. Turn up the OS system volume and the volume on the powered speakers to compensate. If your media player has an EQ, turn down the bass a bit.

It sounds silly, but that actually works a lot of times. Many media players do not amplify sound very well. So if the media is recorded at a high level and the media player volume and/or EQ is cranked, it causes bad playback.

                              Back to Turtle Beach Goodness!!!!!
It was a combination of SRS WOW and some truly bizarre equalizer settings.
(I didn't know the player had it's own settings.)
They conflicted in a way that sounded like hardware problems.
                              Thanks Guys!
