  • No s@h Athlon client!

    From the SETI@home Message Boards:

    Good Evening SETI Fans:

Due to numerous requests, I had a porter try building
a SETI client specifically for the Athlon. Building
with gcc version 3.04 and the following compile flags:

    client name: 3.03.athlon-pc-linux-gnu

    -O3 -fno-exceptions -fno-rtti -funroll-loops -fomit-frame-pointer \
    fno-strict-aliasing -fno-common -pipe -march=athlon

And we gave it a test run. The computation time was within
a second of the time required by the current client:
    i686-pc-linux-gnu-gnulibc2.1

    The following hardware was used:
Athlon XP 1600+ (1400 MHz) and a Gigabyte Board
and 133 MHz DDR RAM (==266 MHz)

The thing about the client code is there is nothing in it
that can take advantage of specific hardware without rewriting
the client code itself. The project is trying to control
one of the variables of the experiment, and that is
the client code itself. We compile the same code for
all the clients. The client code will not be rewritten
    for specific computer hardware.

Sorry to disappoint the Athlon fans, but there is no
reason at this time to release a specific client for
    the Athlon hardware.

According to the latest official figures, 43% of all statistics are totally worthless...
