  • How would you rate these actors?

Sean Penn (Dead Man Walking, I Am Sam, Carlito's Way)
Brad Pitt (12 Monkeys, Kalifornia, Se7en)

Edward Norton(Fight Club, American History X, Primal Fear)
Al Pacino(Scarface, Scent Of A Woman, Godfather)
    Kevin Spacey(American Beauty, Usual Suspects)

Kevin Spacey might be the best actor ever to appear on film. Cary Grant, Alec Guiness, and Trevor Howard come damned close.

AND.... before anyone says i rated brad pitt a 10 because he is popular with the women.. i want to explain.. cos ive heard that over and over again.

Brad Pitt is a 10 as an actor. He can play any character. And so many characters he plays are unique and would be hard to play i would think.

Kalifornia.... 12 Monkeys... Snatch... Fight Club..

Re: How would you rate these actors?

I'll work on a scale of 2-9. Nobody on this list deserves either a 1 or a 10.

Johnny Depp(Edward Scissorhands, Fear And Loading In Las Vegas, From Hell, Donny Brasco)
6 After a rough start (21 Jump Street, anyone), it turns out that Depp is a versatile actor.

Sean Penn (Dead Man Walking, I Am Sam, Carlito's Way)
                          2. Some people seem to feel that Sean Penn is some amazing actor. As far as I can tell he always looks like he's just been hit in the face, and acts about the same. What Robin Wright saw in him I have NO idea.

Brad Pitt (12 Monkeys, Kalifornia, Se7en)
                          7. Brad can, amazingly enough, act. The fact that he's a super-prettyboy means nothing to this particular rating.

                          Denzel Washington(Malcolm X,Training Day, Philadelphia)
Hmm. 6. Denzel is a bit TOO intense for his own good sometimes. He was great in training day, because the character was SUPPOSED to be that intense.

Tom Hanks(Castaway, Philadelphia, Saving Private Ryan)
                          8. Hanks is good. But maybe too good. He's very good at "Joe Average", whether or not Joe Average gets stuck in a bigger-than-life situation (Private Ryan), or gets a raw deal (Philadelphia). But his range is limited, keeping him from getting a 9.

Jimmy Stewart(It's A Wonderful Life, Vertigo, Rear Window)
                          2. Why? Because he made an entire career out of a speech impediment. Many old-time actors did. There were good actors (Gregory Peck), and bad ones (Jimmy Stewart). I, too, can talk out the side of my mouth - it doesn't mean I deserve accolades.

                          Russell Crowe(Insider,A Beautiful Mind, Gladiator)
                          5. Crowe is very interesting, and may deserve a higher rating as time goes on. As for "A Beautiful Mind" - see my rant on psychos later on.

Marlon Brando(The Godfather, On The Waterfront, A Streetcar Named Desire)
                          2. Again, a speech impediment and propensity for eccentricity, combined with good looks at a young age. Feh.

Robert De Niro(Taxi Driver, Raging Bull)
                          7. Started off poorly. Everyone said he was amazing right from the start, but I'm sorry - he was TERRIBLE in Taxi Driver. Acting like a psycho doesn't make you a good actor. I fail to understand why psychos and retards seem to make for "seminal roles" for actors.

Edward Norton(Fight Club, American History X, Primal Fear)
                          7. He's good, but all his performances are basically the same.

Al Pacino(Scarface, Scent Of A Woman, Godfather)
                          9. Pacino rules.

                          Kevin Spacey(American Beauty, Usual Suspects)
                          9. Spacey rules.

You forgot to elaborate on that one, thop.

"A propensitiy for triteness and exaggeration. Always feels like he has to sacrifice some commonly revered icon to prove a point (no matter how much it might detract from his own credibility)"

You're right about Brando, Gurm.. I too feel that he's somewhat overrated. A shame he did his best work in an X-rated foreign film. He deserves more than a 2 though.

About Stewart you're dead wrong. He's got a lot more going for him than his silly stammering.. or did you just judge him based upon Johnny Carson's lame impersonation? Stewart could communicate more with a subtle look than many actors today do with a whole performance. He made millions identify with him, just like Tom Hanks does today. Ironically, Hanks is pretty much a modern day Stewart, with some comic timing thrown in.. yet you rate him an 8..

Let's do directors next.. I feel they contribute far more to a film than do actors, generally.
