Here we go again :)

yes the Wings do look a little old, the Leafs beat them :)

Imagine if a Canadian team wins the stanley cup WOW!!
We'll dominate!

Hey guys, what's this about? Using ice to cool your CPUs?

Patrick
23rd April 2002, 23:15
Probably not too many ice rinks and/or hockey teams where you are, Brian!

Hockey Night In Cyprus just doesn't have the same ring to it.:o (Gotta be from Canada to understand that.)

The Wings just have to get mad to play their best. Once they're PO'ed... lookout...Doc, I notice you waited until the series was wrapped up before you posted. Your comments would've had a lot more impact had they been made when the Canucks were ahead in the series 2-0!;)

However, the Wings were definitely the better team by the end. The Canuck's goalie never got his act together after he let in that shot from center ice in game three. I don't like Chelios, but Yzerman and Larionov are such class guys that I don't mind "my" team losing to them.

I wonder if the Avs will be joining the Canucks on the golf course tomorrow...

Red Wings took a 2-0 series lead agains St. Louis after eliminating the Canuks. The rest of the league should watch out because once these guys get into "the groove"....

Meanwhile....back at the Palace the Pistons will be in round 2 of the playoffs against the Celtics. Given that the Celtics live or die by 3 pointers it should be interesting given that Detroit is known for their full-court hustle.

The Pistons may well be the most under-rated team in the playoffs.

It's a year later now...

Some major differences- The Red Wings have been swept in four straight.

Some things never change- The Leafs are toast again.

The Canucks are facing the Blues in game seven here in Vancouver in just a few minutes. Let's go!

The Canucks have had a little trouble with the Wild, but here's hoping they take care of business tonight in Minnesota.

Congratulations to the Minnesota Wild. They were the better team and deserve to go on to the western semi-finals.

Still one Canadian team left though. Best of luck to the Senators.

It's now April again. And what does that mean?

Stanley Cup Playoffs !!!

Vancouver knocks Edmonton out of the playoffs in their last regular season game, and in the process beats out Colorado for first place in the division. Sweet!

Vancouver and Calgary in round one. Everyone better keep their head up! :)

Hi Patrick,

it doesn't look like Vancouver is hurting much without Bertuzzi.

Kruzin
8th April 2004, 19:27
Bertuzzi should be in jail for what he did to Moore.
I hope he never plays in the NHL again.

Besides that...GO AVALANCHE!!!

Avs won the first game against Dallas. Game2 Tomorrow night :)

Haig
8th April 2004, 19:44
You can bet that if an "enforcer" did that, he'd be banned for life from the NHL.

UtwigMU
8th April 2004, 19:48
So who is in the finals of Stanley?

My favourite team (http://www.hkjesenice.com/) that is also sponsored by our local Matrox dealer (www.izid.si), didn't make it to the national finals for the first time in history this year.

Patrick
9th April 2004, 13:37
It doesn't look like Vancouver is hurting much without Bertuzzi.Haig, the Bertuzzi/Moore incident certainly had an effect on the team for a couple of weeks. Three weeks ago it looked like the Canucks were in a state of total disarray. They were going absolutely nowhere. Then they finally gave their collective heads a shake and went on a tear at the end of the season winning six straight games. Vancouver is a stronger team with Bertuzzi, but he's just one guy and they have now adjusted to his departure.

Patrick
9th April 2004, 13:40
You can bet that if an "enforcer" did that, he'd be banned for life from the NHL. Haig, that hasn't been the case in the past with the NHL. Have a look at my reply to Kruzin.

Patrick
9th April 2004, 13:43
I hope he never plays in the NHL again.Kruzin, the fact that you and I are from Colorado and Vancouver respectively makes it near impossible for either one of us to be unbiased in our view of the Bertuzzi/Moore incident. Did Bertuzzi deserve to be suspended from playing in the NHL? Certainly. For the rest of his life? Hardly.

What Bertuzzi did was disgraceful and disgusting. I’m sure no one regrets what he did more than Bertuzzi himself. Although he can do (and has done) a lot of harm because he’s so big and strong, Bertuzzi is no “goon”. He is one of the most skilled players in the league. Bertuzzi does not have a history of maiming opposition players.

The league will eventually have to set the final number of games Bertuzzi is to sit based on previous suspensions. Read over This article (http://groups.google.com/groups?q=+%22Beukeboom+had+to+retire+because+of+it .%22&hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=4sf4c.783477%24X%255.41602%40pd7tw2no&rnum=1) and you’ll see that the league is pretty soft when it comes to suspensions. One paragraph in the article I linked to describes Matt Johnson’s sucker punch to the back of Jeff Beukeboom’s head. Beukeboom had no idea that Johnson was even near him. That one punch ended Beukeboom’s career. Johnson was suspended for 12 games! Based on that incident (as well as the other’s that are mentioned in the article), Bertuzzi’s suspension up to and including this year’s playoffs is probably justified and enough.

Hey Patrick,

Yup, I'm back on the Canucklehead bandwagon after hopping off a couple of times this year. Those guys are soooo frustrating sometimes, its hard to watch.

But I'm in for the duration of the playoffs, however long that is. My two daughters are rabid hockey fans (one lives in Chilliwack the other in my basement :p ) and are here today so the game is on !!! :)

Go CANUCKLEHEADS Go

Haig
9th April 2004, 19:58
Patrick,

I personally think that the NHL has a set of rules for the enforcers and another for the rest.

McSorely/Brashear incident was far less sever than what Bertuzzi did. It looked bad becuase Brashear was a drama queen and the end result was the concusion from his head hitting the ice. For this, McSorely got 1 year becuase he is an enforcer.

If someone like Sakic would have done the same, I personally don't think that Sakic would be gone for a year.

Before the game, Bertuzzi had said that he was going to make Moore pay for the Naslund hit. Bertuzzi broke Moore's neck and drove his head into the ice. Becuase he isn't an enforcer, I don't think he'll get anywhere near what McSorely got.

Another thing, Moore was challenged and fought a Vancouver tough guy in the 1st period. So they had already got their "revenge" for his hit on Naslund. But Bertuzzi still had to go after him.

2 years ago, Bertuzzi was suspended 10 games for coming off the bench to join a fight in a game against Colorado. He broke the nose of defenceman Karlis Skrastins, a non-fighter.

He also fired a slapshot at Scotty Bowman while he stood behind the Red Wing's bench.

Bertuzzi should go but we all know Bettman caves in to the "superstars".

That's the way I see it anyway:)

Kruzin
9th April 2004, 20:13
I like the fact that the NHL is reserving final punishment on how things go with Moore's recovery.
If Moore is actually able to come back to the game next year, maybe Bertuzzi can come back too.
But if Moore is never able to come back to the game, if his livelyhood was taken away because of this broken neck, Bertuzzi should not be allowed back.

I also think the Vancouver police should press assault charges on Bertuzzi. If anyone else did what he did off the ice, they'd be tossed in jail. Sure hockey is a rough sport, but that does not excuse that kind of blatant attack.

BTW- ATM, the Avs are flogging the Stars again, 4-2 in the 2nd period :)

edit:
Update- Colorado wins game2 over Dallas 5-2, leads series 2-0
:D

Patrick
9th April 2004, 23:22
My two daughters are rabid hockey fans (one lives in Chilliwack the other in my basement)...Laurie, if your daughter lived much farther east than Chilliwack, she’d be pulling for the Flames. ;)
McSorley/Brashear incident was far less severe than what Bertuzzi did.Haig, I don’t understand that opinion at all. McSorley was a “goon” his entire career, and he attacked a guy from behind with a weapon (his stick), clubbing Brashear across the head and knocking him out cold before he hit the ice. That is somehow “far less severe”??!!! Geez, I guess Bertuzzi should have used his stick instead of his glove then!
But if Moore is never able to come back to the game, if his livelihood was taken away because of this broken neck, Bertuzzi should not be allowed back. And why would the NHL do that in light of the fact that Matt Johnson (another career “goon” like McSorley) got a grand total of 12 games for ending Jeff Beukeboom’s career in a similar incident? Not a chance.

Haig
10th April 2004, 19:48

Personally, I think that is less severe.

McSorely attack Brashear from behind and the end result was a consussion.

Punishment = 1 year & McSorely never came back.

Bertuzzi was publically talking about how he will get his revenge in that game. End result was attack from behind which resulted in a broken neck.

Punishment = ?

At the very least, Bertuzzi should get the same as McSorely. But we know he won't becuase Bertuzzi isn't a goon.

And why would the NHL do that in light of the fact that Matt Johnson (another career “goon” like McSorley) got a grand total of 12 games for ending Jeff Beukeboom’s career in a similar incident?

Becuase the NHL has some kind of dart board that decides what the punishment is :) I agree that their punishments do not make sense at all sometimes.

Why not let Bertuzzi play and make him pay Moores salary while Moore is out .That would be a hard cheque

Haig, we could debate this endlessly and not agree to any concrete solution. However, I think every one of us is in complete agreement that we don't need or want to see that kind of nonsense ever again.

Weren't we talking about the playoffs here originally? ;)

If we did that, the regulars in the DV forum would never find it :p

Patrick
12th April 2004, 12:23
Shouldn't this be transferred to The Loung or, better, Temp?Brian, just because the only ice you ever see is in your drink doesn't mean the rest of us can't have some fun. Not necessarily including myself, but look at the quality of forum members who have participated in this thread over the years. This thread has a history here!

Hockey has always had a place in this forum dating back to the Rainbow Runner days, perhaps because Matrox was/is a Canadian company. Even Chris (This Idiot) from the UK used to chime in on occasion about hockey. Have a look at This thread (http://forums.murc.ws/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28321&perpage=15&highlight=chris%20hockey&pagenumber=2) from the archives. Interestingly enough, there was some guy named “Brian” commenting on hockey in that thread as well. ;)

Thanks Sasq for leaving well enough alone!

Ottawa out played them, out chanced them, and out checked them. They beat them in every aspect of the game, except for where it counted, the score sheet :( :(
But you have to admit, this year is by far the best year in a long time for watching some really exciting hockey games. And boy am I ever glad that there are hardly any overtime games. Those kill me. I can't stay up late like I used too.

I cannot believe Kovalev just left the puck there in OT :mad:I don't care if his hand was broken, that was pathetic! What the hell was he trying to do? Draw a penalty?? In playoff overtime!!??? And then to make matters worse, he runs interference with his own player. Yikes!

That was a prime example of why European players have a reputation for being soft.

Haig
14th April 2004, 18:24
I agree Patrick. Even if your hand is broken, either sit on the puck or kick it away. Don't leave the puck and cry about it hoping to draw a penalty ESPECIALLY in OT.

To make matters worse, he actually blamed his teamate (Sourray) for bumping into him. Must have been a lovely ride to beantown

You're right Ken, our season just ended. I won't even bother watching tomorrow's game. Darn shame becuase we actually out played Boston in 3 of the 4 games.

Well it seems Montreal didn't want to go golfing yet. I am surprised and happy they rebounded from game 4. Canucks are showing their Westcoast slacker attitude. They only play at the level they are capable of when behind, or when the series is on the line. What a series though. What a war! Too bad one Canadian team has to go. I hope buds and sens goes 7 as well.

I hadn’t watched any of the Toronto-Ottawa series until the third and overtime periods of game six. I was less than impressed with Toronto, Ottawa was all over them. Is Belfour the only reason why the Leafs have gotten this far?

Elie
18th April 2004, 22:24
I think so Patrick, the Leafs are either too tired or just simply giving up.

I think Ottawa want the cup more than the leafs.

RhinoZ
19th April 2004, 16:21
Belfour is the only reason why Toronto has 3 wins in the series.
But tonight is another long night of hockey. Mont/Bos and Vanc./Cal. My nerves can't much more. Ottawa killed me last night :D

I'd hate to be a hockey fan living in Newfoundland. Games from the west coast would be finishing sometime in the morning there!:tired:

Two game sevens tonight. I'd like to see the Habs pull off a victory.

What great games they were last night. Boston looked out of place, but the Vanc/Cal game was excellent, fast, end to end action. Bummer that there had to be a winner and a loser!
Here's hoping that Ottawa can do what Cal and Mont did last night.

Bertuzzi never really got untracked all year, and the Canucks squeaked out a lot of overtime victories in games they had no right of winning.

Obviously I'm disappointed in how things worked out this year, but after watching the Canuck's poor play during much of the year, I'm not the least bit surprised.

Oh well, maybe the season will be salvaged for me if the Leafs get knocked out tonight. ;)

Good to see you around Haig...or was your visit due for a little bragging rights on a great Montreal win last night.

I was in Montreal all weekend ( drove by the Matrox buildings off of highway 40).
We took the kids for the first time to see the Biodome, Insectarium/gardens and Olympic park. We got lost somewhere off of Sherbrooke street and landed in front of this greek resturant, so we ate there while watching the game on a big TV. The restaurant owner brought in the TV so he wouldn't miss the game. After the second Montreal goal he poured a glass of wine (free) to any Montreal fan. ( Hey I was Hab fan, before the Sens came aboard ) I had to say no more after the forth goal. The place was wild as everyone was having a super time. Even the kids had a great time at the resturant with the server staff.

Game 1: Wings 4, Flames 1

http://detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070412/UPDATE/704120472

DETROIT -- They waited for months to get an opportunity at redemption, and on the playoffs' opening night, the Red Wings didn't disappoint.

The Wings couldn't have scripted this evening better. They dominated the Calgary Flames, 4-1.

Now, they need 15 more to end the spring with that trophy they want.

"We played smart and controlled the game for 60 minutes," goalie Dominik Hasek said.

It was a mismatch almost from the start. The Wings outshot the Flames 46-20, had the majority of the scoring chances and, most importantly, were the more physical team.

The Wings won all the one-on-one battles. They played with more determination, desire and will. They were the hungrier team.

Story.... (http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070417/SPORTS0103/704170354/1128&imw=Y)

Flames shoulder the blame

DETROIT -- Jarome Iginla is tired of the Red Wings eagerly leaping onto the ice as if their pants are on fire. Iginla says that's how players react when they are on the power play and know they are about to fire buckets of pucks at the net.

And he blames himself and his Calgary Flames teammates for the Wings' glee. Iginla said penalties and dumb play are the reasons the Flames trail 2-0 in the Western Conference quarterfinal heading into tonight's Game 3 at Calgary.

The Wings fired 97 shots at goalie Miikka Kiprusoff in two games at Joe Louis Arena. He's been brilliant but not perfect. The Flames have been outshot 97-35 and outscored 7-2.

That's quite likely depending on which Canuckleheads turn up.

It is very tough being a Canuck fan. They can make it so difficult to watch the game. Even if one was a Dallas fan you would have to admit the hockey in Game 6 sucked. When the game came on last night I had better things to do....dishes, vacuuming, laundry; any of which would be more exiting than watch another game of Canucklehead brand hockey from game 6.

I will admit I finally turned the game on for the third period and that was exciting stuff. The Canucks were really lucky to escape that one. Modano's shot off the crossbar would have surely changed the game had it gone in.

with the exception of Luongo and Turco, both teams looked horrible.

Well, that might've been due to the fact that both Vancouver and Dallas have very defensive minded teams and they checked each other into the ice.

I doubt the Canucks would've got 105 points this season (107 for the Stars) if they were both "horrible" teams.

Mehen
25th April 2007, 03:51
Far from it - but in that first series - they both looked horrible.

Henrik, Daniel, and Naslund combined for only 4 goals in 7 games, their power play was abissimal (sp?), and Dallas wasn't even a contender and still took Vancouver to 7 games.

Then you have Anaheim with 2 strong-high scoring lines up front, 3 excellent defensemen in Pronger, Niedermayer, and Beauchemin (first two are among the games best in the last 20 years), and two very capable goalies. The Canucks were 1-3-0 against Anaheim this year.

Don't get me wrong, I would really like to see the 'Nucks pull it off, but I really don't like their chances. Especially after a tiring 7-game series.

Yeah it looked that way. I really like this Ottawa team, but I'm still not sure about Emery.

What's the deal with Detroit?? Hockeytown hasn't sold out a single game in playoffs this year.

Haig

I think Emery has his moments. he isn't as consistent as Luongo & Brodeur but he's just as good when he's on his game.

With all the emtpy seats in Det & NJ, would be nice to bring a team back into Winnipeg or even Quebec City.

Mehen
26th April 2007, 22:25
As nice as it would be to have a team back here, the people simply don't have enough money to shell out the ticket price to fill an arena consistantly. And the really stupid thing is - the arena that we built ~3 years ago or so isn't even big enough for an NHL team!

I could see the Toronto area being able to support another team though.

i think quebec city might have a better chance of getting (back) a team before TO gets a second.

Yeah it's funny how the NHL. sees more green in the US, while all we see are the empty seats on TV. But it's all about percentages

Wow, I was getting a liitle worried there with Ottawa last night too, that second period where they were getting a little lazy was hard to watch.

I could see that happenning, but they would probably call them the Nordiques again. :p

Canucks beat the Ducks 2-1 in the second period of overtime in game two. Not bad for a team with four regulars out with injuries.

Mehen
28th April 2007, 13:46
Ducks played their worst game of the playoffs, and Vancouver still only managed to get 1 in regulation, and the winner was a fluke. I'm gonna stick with being a negative nancy on this one.

Yup, there were octopi on the ice ;)

Also; the Pistons ousted the Orlando Magic 4-0 in round 1 of the NBA.

For the series;

77.6% from the foul line
59 steals/turnovers
27 three-pointers

Which of course Vancouver had nothing to do with. ;)

It's the one scored in overtime that's meaningful. :p

Hey Doc, this is a NHL thread not a NBA thread, but since you mentioned it The Raptors are doing okay too. Not as nice as those stats.

Sens loose in double overtime. That hurt. Now back in Ottawa for the next two games.

The Duck's goalie should've had it, but in all honesty, it was kind of a pretty goal.

However, pretty or not, they're all worth the same. :cheeky:

Missed the game tonight :(

Had an ice-time of my own :)
I play mostly with a bunch of junior A/B and ex and future WHL guys. We are usually on the ice about twice a week and just scrimmage - lots of fun :)

They've got a few PP goals, but yes, their PP needs to smarten up if the Canucks hope to get past this round.

[EDIT] I heard on a local sports broadcast today that the Canuck's PP is 4 for 58 in the playoffs. That's a lot of lost opportunities. :disapp:

Some playoffs eh?

Elie, when at first I didn’t see you post I was wondering if you were okay. But then I remembered that the Leafs were toast, so your continued absence was not totally unexpected. :cheeky:

Mehen

I think they did. It was definitely in, but the goalies pad made it impossible to tell without doubt.
The ice in NY is horrible, it really takes away from Buffalo's game.

2-2 Ana-Van after 3 periods. Vancouver is pretty much done if they let this one slip.

3-2 Anaheim in OT.

Vancouver is down 3-1 now heading back to Anaheim for game 5.

Patrick
2nd May 2007, 02:40
Dang, blowing a two goal lead going into the third period and then losing the game 3-2 in OT sure puts the Canucks in a deep hole in this series.

All season long they've bounced back after a bad game. Next game we'll see just how much grit the Canucks now have left.

Although the Sabres didn't exactly play their best game, the refs really sucked. And that last "goal" should have counted!!! Since when do the refs disallow a goal that made it into the net??

I would have loved to see the Avs in the playoffs instead of Calgary - the flames were not the better team going into the playoffs.

Brodeur hasn't quite been himself this series, nor the series against Tampa. That said, Ottawa won't face its true test until next series - both Buffalo and New York are looking pretty good

edit: go Sens go!!

There are Avs fans, and then there are hockey fans. :devious:

It would sure be nice though to see hometown boy Joe Sakic eventually in a Vancouver uniform (before he gets much older!). Stranger things have happened... :alien:

San Jose in 7
Anaheim in 5
Buffalo 6
Ottawa in 7

1/1 so far. All of the others are still possible, although the Ottawa series doesn't look like it'll go to 7.

Oh my lord, what a way to end a game and/or a series...

What the heck was Luongo doing looking at and signaling the ref for a penalty (after a teammate was hit) instead of keeping his eye and attention on the puck?

Luongo played a fantastic game, and then blew it. Damn... :(

I predict the Ducks will be plucked in their next series (whomever it's with).

I didn't even see the goal. I was too busy screaming at the refs to call that elbow. :p

It wasn't going to matter anyway. Vancouver was never going to take three straight games from the Ducks.

I guess its time to switch sports and start watching to see how far the Suns and hometown boy Nash can go.

Mehen

Ottawa Senators goaltender Ray Emery got into a minor traffic accident Friday on his way to the airport to catch a plane to New Jersey.

''Ray Emery was late in catching the team's charter flight to Newark this afternoon, and in doing so was involved in a minor vehicle accident,'' the Senators said in a statement. ''Ray caught a later commercial flight and will join the team this evening.''

Emery's white hummer was one of three vehicles in the crash, although it did not appear that anybody was hurt.

It is not known if provincial police will issue any charges.

Don't think its serious enough to affect anything.

Yeah, the Canucks really need to beat the bushes in the off-season for some goal scorers.

As much as I can appreciate the athletic skills of Nash, I just can't get into basketball.

I stated something five years ago in post #27 which I think is quite suitable yet again:
