  • Raid array Weirdness!

I delivered a computer with a mirrored raid array.
A couple of weeks later the customer calls and say that the computer won't boot!
I arive at the sceen of the cr...(ehr scuse me)Computer mutilation.
One Of the drives is dead(but why havent the raid done its work?)
    The remaining drive is empty?????
I "revive" the bad one and now the promise claims that its a single striped array on it!?!

If two drives is in a array in 1x2 mirroring then how can one then suddenly become blanc and the other one become a striped single array???

    This is strange!?!

    I'm presuming it's a software RAID?

I quit using those ages ago for similar reasons. Fasttraks handle this kind of thing transparently.

He said "the promise", so I'm assuming he means it's a hardware array.

I'd say that's a pretty flaky behavior for a hardware array - I'd check the controller.

Right you are, missed that, but I'd check the cable on the offending drive(s) FIRST. The sole Promise array failure I've seen was the result of a cable going sour.

One of the HDD's got the "Munch files"disease!
Both the drives are going off the array!
New ones are going to form a new Array.
The array is going to be installed from scratch and not from backup!
The aparent transformation of a 1x2Mirror array to a 1+0 stripe array was due to "Customer interference" AKA P.E.B.K.A.C.!

                "Munch files"disease:

The hard drive corupts files randomly.
It usualy takes a couple of days for it to manifest on a new HDD
The "Munch files"disease is not detecteable with scandisk, ndd, etc....
A freshly partitioned and formatted "Munch files"disease hdd will seem perfectly healthy in all tests untilll files are stored onto them
Often those drives never physical evidence of fault (bad sectors......)

                    10000$ !!!!

                    We have a winner!
And the winner is Dr. Mordrid!

                    The HDD is an IBM!

This means that I will probably Use Samsung HDD's in our new computers!
Our retailer only have IBM, Samsung, Western Digital!

We have only had ONE bad Samsung drive.....
We have now had 4 ibms go bad (the one who got its powerconnector broken of by some yoyo don't count)
I have removed 30+ Bad WD's out of different computers!

Perhaps by law if your hard disk goes down the company making them has to supply the next hard disk at half price. perhaps that will sharpen up there QA and force them to fix problems more quickly.

                        Heehee.

Used to be that Seagate was the biggest 'muched file disease' offender. How times change, eh?

IBM has a long way to go in getting their rep back, that's for sure.

It was bad enough their QC dropped through the floor, but how they handled it was absolutely Clintonian

Pretty much. It's very much in the language over here as an adjective, 99.9% of the time derogatory even in newspapers like the NY Times etc.

                              In one article they noted the "Clinton Doctrine", which applied to the problems in Bosina etc., was clintonian in that;

                              1. It is unprecedently sweeping......
                              2. It is half-baked......
                              3. It is a promise with an out.....

                              Sounds about right

Can a listing in Websters Dictionary be long in coming? Might make the next edition at the rate things are going.

Just go to Google sometime and search for it. You'll come up with about 7800 matches
