• Buy a DVD-RAM or wait until the Blue Lasers?

The subject says it all. I can get a barely used HP DVD100i for $250 from a friend now, or should I wait for the new blue laser technology drives?

I'd wait:

media compatibility (write)
HP DVD+RW rewritable disc
CD-R media
CD-RW media
media compatibility (read)
DVD+RW
DVD-ROM
DVD-video
CD-digital audio (red book) and CD extra
CD-ROM (mode 1 - yellow book)
CD-ROM XA & CD-I (mode 2/form 1 - green book)
CD-ROM XA & CD-I (mode 2/form 2 - green book)
CD-bridge & photo-CD (single and multi-session)
CD-video

Looks like the drive is outdated with the 200i coming out at the same price. And the 200i will support more formats, such as DVD+R.

It depends on what you plan on using the drive for, really. So, what are your needs?

Also, it looks like the 100i can be had for about $325 new.

My friend used it about 2 weeks, and realized that he really shouldnt have sold his Clie and bought a DVD-RAM, as he needs the Clie more. So, $250 is a good price for something thats essentially new. I mostly plan on backing up files, like DivX content and very rarely video mastering, though, I doubt I'll do that.

Then just spend $80 on a Lite-On. It will burn CDs even faster.

Ive got one (Toshiba SD1011, or something), dont use it much.

They are quite slow.
The disks cost a fortune, well they do here anyway.
Even though XP says support for DVD-RAM during install, it doesnt really.

On the plus side, you can stick a lot of stuff on it. I use mine mainly to store Ghost images, and other full system backup type stuff.

For little files, I use a Zip.

For slightly bigger backups, eg 'My Documents' folder, I use CD-R/RW.

I would say I only use the DVD_RAM about once a month, if that. Its a waste, since I paid $2500 for it when they were first released (Thats US$1200 roughly).

I would say dont bother, but its up to you.
