View Full Version : Those under NDA must be having a field day!

I mean with all this speculation going on, all these theories everybody is coming up with about what technology Matrox is gonna use on their next card, those who actually know what's going on must be having a lot of fun with this. I know I would. :)

I know that most of the new info we've been getting has given us something to hope for once more.

To Ant: I know your reading this, so listen carefully  : just create an account called something like "FunnyOldBastardWithJuicyInfo" or anything like that and start sharing -"the love"- with everyone. We know you have -"The Love"-, so don't keep it to yourself, plzzzzzzzzzzz ;) ;) ;)

There is certainly a good feeling surrounding it all, not something I've come across since the rumours about the G400 MAX started to appear just before it was announced. I have a feeling Parhelia is going to be better than even the most optimistic ones amongst us are hoping. From the rumours we've seen surfacing it looks like this product is going to be the sort of all round high quality affair the original Millennium was.

no! you mustn't fall to the dark side! Use the displacement force!

Hmm... and at Millenium equivalent prices by the sound of it - I remember when a top-of-the-range millenium cost far more than the next most expensive component in a computer... ;)

Damn, now I'm having to consider putting off buying a motorbike so I can afford the next Matrox card :(

Thx Ant, you've just made my day :)

It's true that the millennium was the darling of its era (with dos performance 10x better than the Impression Plus). Does that mean that Parhelia has improved Dos Pixel Shading Functions ? :p

I hope your right Ant. This may indeed be the card that re-kindles our faith and support of the company. But if we get our hopes up and it turns out to be a big disappointement .... ( I can't predict what people are gonna do and say, I'll leave this to your imagination, plus I doubt it will be a disappointement but you never know)

You know what I mean?

I was a follower of Matrox since I bought my first card, the Millennium II. I love everything abour Matrox, especially MURC.

I've also been a MURCer since 1999, but my original account was deleted cause of a year of inactivity. (I had some things I needed to sort out in my life)

Before G400 was announced, there was a certain good attitude from those in-the-know. Rumors where abundant, and leaned towards a performance card, which came true.

Before both G450 and G550, the attitude was very different, more subdued. Rumors where not as rampant, and indicated non-performance products, which came true.

These days the attitude is more like that of the G400 days, but with an elevated level of anticipation. Expectations are high, and rumors promise a monster of a card. I have a strong feeling this too shall come true. Most likely in a way to completely blow away most people's expectations.

I thought someone once said that part of an NDA is that you're not allowed to say that you're under an NDA?

Wombat
28th March 2002, 15:39
Depends on the conditions of the NDA (which are now called CDAs for no good reason). The one with Matrox doesn't have that. However, some BBs don't want to be known, and we respect that.

Sorry guys, despite everyone's rampant excitement, I remain to be convinced. Writing for www.gamesmack.org, for the past 2 years I've been reporting on the rumours that Matrox had a new high level graphics card "just around the corner". I've seen too many dates come and go, and too many rumours about the G800 that turned out to be just that... rumours.

I will believe if/when the product is released. No amount of hype in the MURC forums will change my mind. Just a formal press release from Matrox themselves.

Sorry to put a damper on your party, but I've seen it so many times before.

Well, I've also followed the rumours closely for the past two years and things are actually different this time. You can't deny the facts that are out there now and I stand on the opposite end of the field of you on this one. I believe!

btw, what facts you ask? Haig giving enough hints to make us all happy :), Ant never allows anything posted on his news site unless he feels there is strong proof for it, So many good pieces of info through these forums(too many to list), Displacment Mapping show at GDC with what appears to be "Matrox Hardware", and one of my favorites....Haig says, "Let the countdown begin!" :D

Sorry to break it to you Arnie, but we're not here to convince you. I can't speak for everybody, but I don't care if you think it's a real card or not. You're not damping my (our?) party, but I'll have my new Matrox card, and be smiling all the way.

There is definately some powerful hardware behind the displacement mapping presentation. Haig said that it was on an un-announced card. (If you want a link, just ask.) There has to be something brewing at Matrox HQ.

We will be smiling too "all the way" to the computer shop if/when this great card comes out too. We just refuse to start the party before real proof appears.

Even though the displacement mapping demos have me convinced that matrox is brewing something nice up, I am still cautious because:

1) The card may be too expensive to produce and/or scale down to become affordable.
2) Displacement map demos don't tell me whether matrox really has a fully working card, or simply a card that can do basic texturing and displacement mapping.
3) Matrox have not uttered a word about it yet, meaning it is probably at least 3 months away from shelves or more.

Last time, I got my expectations up too high, so this time, I'll be damned before I believe anything that happens with matrox unless matrox explicitly puts it out.

Let's just hope then for all the "believers" that Matrox won't announce another G550 spec product. I'm sure you all remember the disappointment surrounding that announcement, and all the speculation it was going to be the "G800" spec product.

As I said before, I'll believe it when I see it. Been burned too many times before as a Matrox fan.

I think we're all of the same opinion here, but the optimism being shown by those who would know what's coming gives us all some hope that we will be seeing it (wait for it!) SOON!™! :D This same optimism gives some proof that what is coming is not just another G550-type release.

As much as I hope they will do, I don't think so :(

http://www.matrox.com/mga/media_center/home.cfm

Matrox will present its complete line of comprehensive business graphics solutions in Breakaway sessions, and will demonstrate the Matrox Millennium G550 Dual DVI graphics card on two 17" Viewsonic digital flat panels at the Solutions Pavilion and Reception on Sunday, April 7th from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m

IF matrox is getting ready to get us happy, I think they will choose the E3 for that....

but on the other side this topic on the Matrox forums is very intreseting...
http://forum.matrox.com/mgaforum/Forum8/HTML/000932.html

with things as:

> And Mr Haig, how's your commend on polygon boosting technology like this kind??
< Ask me this after we announce our next product.

> Are your current posts referring to the G550 eTV? (which is already mentioned in the INF file of the G550 driver) Or can we expect sth real?
< It's not referring to the G550 eTV.

very intresting:
Initially, it won't be the same driver package. Perhaps later on, we may do a unified driver but it's still undecided on that.

that last one let me think that the chip is NOT a Gx00/Gx50 based chip, but totally new :)

I layout PCBs for a living and if they have Displacement mapping running on this new hardware, I would say that they are damn near a final product (in terms of hardware, software is another matter). Something as complicated and design rule driven as a Graphics card either works, or it does not, there is no middle ground.

If any of the NDA people are willing to slap the prototype cards on a scanner and release a picture or two when the production version of the card has been release, I think you will be surprised at how closely they resemble each other.

robert. :)

P.S. I've always admired how the the Matrox cards look, after being in the PCB industry for 5 years, you get to know what a good card looks like, and Matrox produce some of the best.

Those that doubt P's linage will, IMHO, be eating crow when it's specs come out. This is no G550 in waiting. NoWayInHell. P isn't casting heads, it's casting NUKES.

NDA's are NDA's and those of us under them cannot say anything detailed, but impressions are another matter.

That said; based on the very real info I've seen it's specs have more WOW!! factor than any new product I've seen in a very, very long time. Far more so than the G400 MAX....by at least an order of magnitude.

If even half of it works as it reads it'll be an amazing board. If it all works, and I expect that it will, Ant's going to have to find a lot of new bandwidth to handle the traffic.
