Problem Installing WinXP

Howdy all. Tried installing WinXP today and got an error. 0x4, 0, 0, 0, 0 Is the code it gives me. I have tried everything I can think of, admittedly not much, but I always get that error. I am running an Iwill KK266-R mainboard, and I am using the on-board raid. I have a Geforce 3 and a Hercules GametheatreXP.

Anyone have any helpfull hints or tricks for me?

1. place XP cd back in case
2. install Win2K until XP SP-1 is released

This way you get to keep your sanity.

Actually that error has been rather common since the NT days. Here's a Microsoft Knowledge Base article on it that has some troubleshooting advice;

XP is fine, and yes it takes some time to install properly on some systems. IMO, it's worth it.

That link you provide is a deadend.

How are you installing? Is this a clean install? Are you running the install from a current windows installation?

Give more details plz.

I did correct the link, but do you notice a notable absense in the affected OS list? Something that has a "2" and three zeros in it.

I did a clean install ... booted and installed from CD


About the link ... : I tried making a link to, but it doesn't work .. MS must do something to keep pepole from linking directly to a KB article !!

You can simply do a search on error 0x4 and it wil be there.

Yah, the link works now.

Win2000 is known for the stop errors as well, but there is another section of articles dedicated to it for the corrections.


But anywho, your link is for when Windows is already installed and you reboot one fine day and find the stop error staring you in the face.

This isn't his problem IMO.

Have you tried to get XP installed first by using the regular IDE controllers?

Thanks all for the quick responses. I used the "wrong" drivers to install the on-board raid, seems to work fine now.

Getting the correct combination of BIOS and drivers for an onboard RAID controller can be VERY touchy. I just changed my onboard RAID bios for a standard U100 BIOS and am MUCH happier. Not only are my transfer rates higher, but the VIA patches and George's patch no longer assign absurd system priority to the device.

But I can't live without my raid. It's just too damned fast compared to a single drive.
