• "I have a molten 200 Cyrlix"

I recieved a rather confused call today:

Me: hello.

Customer: Hi, my name is Jane Doe and I had my computer in for service at yours for about a half year ago, do you remember me? (realy suggersweat voice)

M:No (trying to muster all my dignity and happiness in that single word, trying not to sound ironic )

C: My computer was dead and you said that the cpu had melted and then you was to expensive so I did not let you fix the computer. (Gasping for breath, she had to pause for a sec )

C: Then I got/borrowed/bought a P233 2 from a friend and it don't fit, can you fix that?

M: Mayby, what was the CPU that melted?

C: A Cyrlix 200!

M: I'm sorry but the Cyrix 200 uses the "Socket 7" connector and the Pentium II 233 uses the "Slot1" Connector, and they are not interchangeable.

C: Is'nt there an adaptor, that could make it work?

M: No.

C: But can't you excahnge the P233 against a CPU that works in my computer?

M: ..........(thinking about a good answere)

C: Damnit I need this computer and I don't wanna pay any more to get it fixed!!

M: why dont you come down to the shop with your computer, and we'll discuss an exchange when we know what kind of cpu your computer needs?

C: But I said that I don't want to pay anymore Money, cant't I just bring the CPU?

M: No (Realy wanting to end the conversation quickly), But I promise that I you bring the computer and the Cpu's, We will look at them without charging anything.

C: hm.....I'l think about it, bye.

Click!

I still don't remember her or her computer.

She didnot show up today

EDIT:
1. My post sliped away before it was finished.

2. I do remember her!!
It was the Mainboard AND the CPU that was fried!!

And she refused to accept a used board and CPU and thought the "new" replacement parts was to expensive.

Is that kind of like those Compaqs where the CPU multiplier was set in a BIOS register, and they used a full byte for the multiplier, and you could set it via a wonderful little program called "burnup" that would put it at x255?

Why is it that people who think your services are worth absolutely nothing are shocked when you cannot and will not pull out a magic wand and solve their problem instantly and for free? Maybe this is a lesson about not spoiling your children.. for the good of everyone in society.

The main problem is that we are not located in our capital (Sweden's) city: Stockholm.

There the usualy chrage 50 to 100$ just to look at it and a aditional 50$ an hour to fix it !!

And People don't even bat an eye!!

"Our" customers think we that we are to expensive when we charge 0$ to look at it and a "Standard" 50$ (unlimited work time )to fix it with a months guarrantee

Technoid, that sounds awfully familiar. If we were 60 miles farther south (Austin, Texas) we'd make tons more money. Those people are STILL pretty damned rich there. Only problem is we would lose all the high end brand names we carry because someone already carries them there. There are too many country bumpkins here who don't have a clue about how to value what we do (custom audio/video/phone/ethernet wiring and home theater). What makes it worse is that there are a bunch of know nothing "competitors" who are trying to do it too. They underbid us and then people need us to come fix their screwups. Some idiots even go buy their equipment online or from Best Buy or the PX or something and then they expect us to take up hours upon hours of our time helping them make everything work and teaching them how to use it, when they didn't even have the decency to buy it from us in the first place. I don't think so.

Some idiot woman came in the other day with a turntable that her idiot daughter had bought BROKEN for $30 from Circuit City. The (proprietary, fixed to the tonearm) cartridge was broken and all the wires were loose. I told her we would fix it for $65.00 and THEN try and find a needle for it or she could get a new one for $150.00. She stormed out. Some people are just too stupid to admit (or even comprehend) that they've made a mistake.

The Black Nightmare....

Here Is the Nightmare:

Before Christmas Someone turned in a Fujitsu something computer (I can't remember the exact modelname, it eludes me for the moment )
I was a P100 with a 1GB hdd and it was one of the black models fujitsu had...

He wanted a bigger HDD preferarly a 40GB

Our sales person told him explicit that it woulden't be looked at untill after new years eve (our...hrm, my backlog was rather long then )!

He even wrote it down on the recite...

When I eventualy got to it I connected it up and pressed the power button....

Nothing happened!!

So I double checked everything on the outside and dito on the inside!!

Nothing seemed wrong and yet id did not start!

After an hour I gave up....

The customer says that It was perfectly running before he turned it in!

So we sent it away to a specialised shop who "fixes" imposible hardware errors!
Like lightningstruck monitors, laptops who has been run over by trucks and so on! (and best of all: if they can't fix it they usualy only charge one man hour ~50$)

The motherboard was fried!
The technisian told us that it would take a week to get it fixed...
A week later he phoned and apologised because it wasn't finished but in his opinion Fujitsu sweden was manned by a couple of a**heads (his words ) and he hadden't been able to get the motherboard.

A week after that he still had problem to get the black nightmare to start...

Now it seems that It actualy will be passeable...

And guess who holds the Tab?

we at my work!

Becase the customer still insist that it was working perfectly the day before he turned it in!

And the customer has been harasing us even before new years eve about the computer.

That computer don't support any bigger hdd's than a gig!

I for one thing is not going to touch that computer again!

We have a similar problem being only a few hours from Toronto... people expect us to keep our prices down the the ultimate discount level. Never mind our pricing for service.

Gee your ram prices are high... I can get 256MB for 40 dollars from joe nobody's store in toronto... And I can get my computer for so much less that what you charge and the guy guarentees that its made with high quality parts... like look at here... Duron 900 and AMD Motherboard With Ram and a "Ultra Wicked Fast" Hard Drive, 3D sound and 3D Graphics Accellerator, and a 17" .20hdp Samsung Monitor with 3 Piece 4000 Watt Ultra Stereo Speakers, Internet Keyboard and and Optical "Laser" Mouse, Windows Millenium and 4800 Dollars worth of Software with every system purchase. What is the difference between that and your system that would make it cost so much more.

I hate price matching with the likes of that... and how hard it is to make people understand that you get what you pay for.

How come my computer runs so slow... hmmm... well lets see... *mumble mumble* PCCHIPS *mumble mumble *Samsung Hard Drive* mumble mumble * SIS 630 Video * mumble mumble * Cheapy Sound... *mumble mumble* heat sink held on with paperclips *mumble mumble*... Well madam.. I think I have found your problem... its Microsofts fault... you know.. "Windows"
AMD Phenom 9650, 8GB, 4x1TB, 2x22 DVD-RW, 2x9600GT, 23.6' ASUS, Vista Ultimate
AMD X2 7750, 4GB, 1x1TB 2x500, 1x22 DVD-RW, 1x8500GT, 22" Acer, OS X 10.5.8
Acer 6930G, T6400, 4GB, 500GB, 16", Vista Premium

The only way to survive is to be either the cheapest or the best and even if you are the best some people still expect you to be the cheapest
When you own your own business you only have to work half a day. You can do anything you want with the other twelve hours.
