      Try Tiny personal firewall.
Not as friendly but gives you much more control.
It's totally free for personal use.

Or you could... not use a software firewall (also known as "Resource Waster"). They are useless.

        USE

        LESS

            What about hardware?

I use a Linksys myself. Though the way comcast is acting, that may become difficult.

How can they get away with that ?

As the article says, you are only using the bandwidth which you are paying for ?

Whats NAT got to do with that.

Gurm: Are you gonna write that FAQ to show us how to hide the ports without a firewall then?

Didn't he say he was going to do that????
                  So many ports to close.
I wouldn't say they're completly useless but there better nothing.
If I get onto adsl I'll go for a hardware solution but I can't see much point for a modem connection.

                    Ok,

Seriously here... I don't DO anything. I just install WinXP, and then I go check my ports, and lo and behold none of them are open. *sigh* I suppose there might be something in all my tweaking that I am overlooking here, but really...

You mean you DON'T turn off the USE LESS inbuilt software firewall that Windows XP alledgedly has?

I run Zonealarm cos its :
                      A) Free.
                      B) Never seems to show up under Win2000's resource meter as using much resources.
                      C) Seems to do its job quite well.
                      D) Is supposed to stop programs accessing the internet from your PC without your consent, rather than just stopping people getting IN, it stops trojans getting OUT.
                      E) Did I mention free?

i use zonealarm also, it is good for a free product, which is important for a student. it seems to stop silly hackers from getting at me from the uni network (i get a warning about every 10 mins)

Ok, yes I turn off the builtin firewall.

Here's what else I turn off that I can think of:

                          - Automatic updates
                          - Remote registry (service)
                          - Remote desktop

Any service that looks like it talks to the network but isn't necessary for TCP/IP.

I'm doing a reinstall later today, and I actually WILL attempt to document it for y'all... with before and after results from GRC (not that Stevey Boy's opinion matters) and a couple other places.

I know XP takes a wee bit longer to install than 9x and 2K but ....
