  • Stand Alone DVD Player

Can someone suggest a nice stand alone DVD player to capture DVD's with my RAINBOW Runner Video Capture card?

    I have a P3/1000 w/ 384 meg ram PC (windows 98 SE)

I have perfect captures using a VCR and would like to hook up a DVD player to my capture card (YEAH YEAH, I know the quality might not be as good as editing VOB files, but it will be good enough for me) so I can capture DVD movies also.
I am using the macrovision patch and it works good for the VCR.
I am wondering if a stand alone DVD player will give me problems with macrovision even though I am using the patch.

Any help will be very much appreciated..

BTW it would be very good if the suggested DVD player also played MP3's..

If you're looking for a VCR-friendly (no macrovision) & no region DVD player, I think the Apex/Hiteker ( http://www.dvd-wizards.com/darrenk/ ) family of players are great. I have an Apex AD-700 player, and it works wonderfully.

      Thanx for your reply TMBackstrom!

So you have copied DVD's to your VCR with out any problems?
Or you have modified that EPROM chip on your APEX DVD player?

I know that with this Macrovision patch I got from this forum, I shouldn't have any problems with macrovision, when I capture the DVD movies to my Matrox capture card ( it works great with VCR tapes encoded with macrovision). You have captured DVD's to your PC using your matrox capture card using the "patch" to eliminate the macrovision?

Modifying this Eprom chip to record a DVD to a VCR is definately a bonus!

Did you modify the chip yourself? Or buy a new modified chip?

      Thanks again,

I've recorded DVDs to my VCR just fine. I have a DVD-ROM drive in my computer, so I've never copied from the Apex to my computer. I just rip directly.

As to modifying the Apex, I have installed the new firmware by CD-R. The Apex AD-700 can re-program internally. It plays Region 1 and 2 perfect with no macrovision or RCE problem.

          Thanx alot TMBackstrom

I just went over to Circut City to see if they had any Apex's left and while I was looking at the APEX AD 1500
One of the salesmen came over and put a sales tag on it lowering it another 20 bucks to 79.99.. Was that an OMEN or what , LOL
Before I left I downloaded that "patch" for the APEX AD 1500
and I will follow the directions to burn it as an ISO tomorrow and install it.. Hopes I have as good a luck as you did!
          Seems pretty straight forward.
          Thanx so much!

Sounds like a good deal! I paid $99.00 for my AD-700 a while back. Be sure to follow the directions carefully for the CD-R flashing.
