  • Is this normal CPU utilization?

I'm using Picvideo and VirtualDub w/ RRG (sadly its replacement was out of stock at the store ) and capturing at quality 15, 4/2/2, 320x240 30fps, it's eating up 90% of my CPU and it's an Athlon 1.2Ghz! It doesn't seem normal to me... OS is Win2K Pro. Help this anti-Matrox zealot out!
    AMD Athlon-C 1200MHz
    512MB Crucial PC133 CAS2
    MSI K7T Turbo
    45GB IBM Deskstar 75GXP
    Plextor Ultraplex 40x
    Matrox G400 16MB Dualhead
    Matrox RRG add-on
    19" Samsung SyncMaster 955DF
    GNU/Linux (and Windows 2000 Professional)

      Damascus,

I don't know the answer but I'll give you what mine does using the same settings. It's between 50% and 60% during TV recording, system specs below. Just notice this is a WinTV not an RRG (but if you want to get rid of yours just send it to me ), and VDub 1.7

      dsp
      1.8GHz PIV (Northwood) @ 2.5GHz
      512MB Corsair PC2700 @ 2-2-2 1T

      8.4GB Quantum CR
      40GB Maxtor 5400

my own experience with virtualdub and my g400TV under w2k is that it sucks huge amounts of CPU time. I think it must have something to do with how virtualdub handles RGB / YUV translation. I now use AVI_IO quite sucessfully.
