  • Run 2 different windowmanagers on 2 different monitors

is there anyway to run 2 different WMs or at least 2 different desktops on different monitors on my G400 MAX? i have a script that lets me run several X sessions on the same monitor but i wish to run them on different screens...

You could try running two different X Clients, but I don't know if the drivers will take it. Maybe if you played with Frame Buffer displays.

Here's my current setup...... I have a Radeon 64 DDR (needed something with a bit more speed for OpenGL in linux) and a Millenium 2. The Millenium 2 is now connected to a 19 inch monitor and the Radeon to a 21 inch. In XFree86 4.1.0 you can set it up so that you have two different monitors, each with a different window manager. Enlightenment, in fact is the only one that loads up on both monitors..... so what I had to do.... is basically run Enlightenment then go to the second monitor and start up a different window manager. KDE might have this stuff built in, BUT I don't use KDE (reminds me too much of windows) Hope that clears up some for you...... There is quite a bit of information, especially for running Dual-head in linux with a G400. The Powerdesk that Matrox released should at least set up the Dual-head right. Then just do what I posted with Enlightenment, it should work great for you. Laters.

            Window managers...

Some window managers don't like to see other window managers on the same X server, even if it is on a seperate display. What I could recommend however, is this:

Run one window manager on the main X server :0.0. It might want to manage :0.1, it might not. Either way, you should be able to run an instance of Xnest, which will make another X server run in a window. Take that window, bring it to full size with no borders on :0.1, and you should have two independant X servers running.

            Just a thought.

Mandrake 8.1 (even with my strange setup) set up the dual-head stuff flawlessly. One big screen with Xinerama. nome-sawfish was the window manager I used. Works great. Though with my setup, I had to put it in 16bit, because the millenium 2 won't do 1600x1200x24bit. Laters.

Funny, that's how I had my Debian install set up, is that I had two seperate window managers on each screen. Right now I'm in windows XP, let me go into linux and I'll post back here after I get a working XFConfig file for you, then I'll post that.
