    Can anyone recommend a good Samba guide for a Samba virgin like myself? Bascailly I want to map HDs from my Win 2K machines onto my Linux box (Mandrake 8.1) and vice versa. I have Samba setup and can see my Linux box from the Win2K machines but not access it, I've no idea how to get my Linux box to see the Win 2K machines.

    I wish I could give you a good site on how to set up samba, but I do not know of one. I used my SuSE handbook for most of the setup. You can try http://www.samba.org for more info.

    All I had to do to get my win98 machine to see one of my linux dirs was to put this in my /etc/smb.conf file and use yast to configure my machine to stat samba. It was very easy on SuSE 7.1.

    [mp3s]
    path = /home/mp3/
    comment = mp3's
    read only = no
    public = yes
    browseable = yes
    create mode = 0750

    This makes my mp3 dir on my linux machine visable on the network.

    To viewed shared drives on my windows machine from linux i used smbmount (try smbmount --help). At least I think, I don't do that very often.

    I also have smb setup to share my home dir automatically when I log on to a windows machine on my network and share my Z53. But that is out of the scope of your question.

      Install the Wizards in Mandrake 8.1!! It'll set up Samba for you exactly how you want it. I had it working great. It creates a /home/shared (if I recall correctly, it's late) and it's visible from the Windows machines. It works great. Good luck. I'd tell you exactly how to do it, but I'm in XP, and too lazy to switch over to linux right now.

            Browsing the Windows

            I've installed Linux in a couple of computers in our highschool and it's difficult to browse Explorer-like the shared Windows drives from Linux. The only program I've found is xsmbrowser, which can be found from this site . If you know of something else, please let me know too!

              I think my Mandrake 8.1 Samba is bollocked up. I can see the shared folders and I can look inside and then if I come out refresh they disappear and the folders are empty. Later it will start asking for the password for the XP shares constantly.
              Out of interest I can't remember any samba wizards when I installed the program.
              The other interesting thing is if chose to browse the home network I get the message cannot resolve host name.

                Similar problems to those I was having. The wizards don't seem to be installed by default, I installed them via Mandrake Software manager then ran the Samba wizard and everything was up and running. Found I just had to add my Windows machines and their IP numbers to the hosts file. Then to mount a Windows share under Linux I did the following:

                mount -t smbfs //MURC02/D /mnt/Win2KD

                  I don't think ANY of the wizards are installed by default. Mandrake was so proud of itself for programming those for 8.1, but they didn't have them installed by default. Go figure. Actually, for browsing shares, Nautilus works, and I believe you can browse them within Konqueror as well. I use Gnome, instead of KDE, so don't quote me on that last part.

                    This is one of the reasons why linux is being held back from taking a larger share of the market. Joe public wouldn't have a clue where to start. I'll slap the CD in and see if I can find the wizards.

                      It's easy enough to install the wizards, just type wizard in the software manager and it'll tell you what CD to put in. Mandrake is getting very "Joe Public" friendly. I would actually set it up for some people that don't know anything about computers. In my opinion for most things it's just as easy to use, if not easier than Windows is.

                        It isn't easier to setup than Windows although it's getting better.
                        Many of the instructions for installing additional hardware / software are incomplete or just plain wrong and you have to work it out yourself which I suppose is part of the fun.

                          It's just pure nonsense to say Windows is easier than Linux. Everyone is just used to Windows! Macintosh is easier, though.

                          BTW I installed Mandrake 8.1 and I noticed that I can browse SMB shares with Gnomba, which comes with Gnome 1.4. I haven't had luck with browsing Nautilus, but I'll try that too.

                            I've had good luck with Gnome, GnoSamba, etc. I'll even use TkSmb often. I haven't used any of these wizards, but I think swat is one of the coolest software configuration utilities anywhere.

                            I actually think that Linux really is easier to setup than Windows. When I put RH7.2 on my g/f's computer, it was easier to set up than Windows, with better security. And the only reboot was at the absolute end of the installation.

                              I was able to get Natuilus to browse smb networks by installing the gnome-vfs-extras package. It did not like the directory structure on my SuSE system, but I hacked the Makefile. (Guess I could of just of just fed ./configure the right options. But when I configured it I did not know it was wrong )

                              Either way, here are some rpms for you Red Hat like distros.
