  • 478 MB Wav to MP3 ... W9x vs XP

Don't know what to think of this :

I just converted a CD with 10 tracks to MP3 with a total of 478 MB wav files.

    Win9x :
3 min 50s to convert 10 songs and 478 MB Wav files

    WinXP :
5 min 29s to convert 10 songs and 478 MB Wav files

    Arrghhhhhhh !

Both using the same Lame encoder and both encoding to 160 Kbits High Quality !

I'm going to re-install WinXP and try again to see if it remains the same !

If the diff of the mp3's shows no difference, then I bet you have some extraneous services running around in there.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

Everybody has 'em... extraneous services, that is.

Your machine will run much faster if you turn some of that crap off.

Like the indexing service, for example...
