  • DSL Finally Available For General Usage Here

    WooHoo.
The two major ISPs have rolled out their DSL packages. One of them is the telco, which is more expensive than the other ISP but has consistently been faster in the past on dialup.
    Its prices are as follows
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Cable & Wireless Jamaica
    ADSL PRICES
    Speed (Downstream/
Upstream)(Kb/s) E-mail Addresses Number of IP Addresses Activation Charge (One Time)(US$) MonthlyMonthly Charge(US$) Charge(US$)

    Select 256/128 3 1 Dynamic US$50 US$93
    Premium 768/256 5 1 Dynamic US$50 US$129
    Business 1544/256 15 1 Static US$150 US$750

All you need to get connected is

A Cable & Wireless telephone line with ADSL Service.

    An ADSL splitter.

    An ADSL modem.

An Ethernet Network Interface Card or an available USB port, depending on the type of modem selected.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The modems you can use include the Alcatel Speed touch home series.
I want to know where I can get one of those modems to buy as well as the POTS Splitter.

The other provider has the following prices

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Infochan ADSL Packages

    InfoChan ADSL UltraNet Residential
    Permanent, Unlimited Internet Access!
    384K DOWNLINK, 128K UPLINK
Up to four (4) E-mail Address with Advanced E-mail
    News Services
    Cost: US$86.00 per month

    InfoChan ADSL UltraNet SOHO
    Permanent, Unlimited Internet Access!
    1000K DOWNLINK, 256K UPLINK
Up to seven (7) E-mail Address with Advanced E-mail
    News Services
    Cost: US$109.00 per month

    ONE-TIME COSTS US$

    Activation (from Exchange) 50.00
    Installation 90.00
    POTS Splitter* 25.00
    Microfilter* 17.00
ADSL Modem (Alcatel Speed Touch Home) 270.00

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I am figuring if I can get the prices for POTS Splitter*, Microfilter*, and ADSL Modem (Alcatel Speed Touch Home) I'll be able to make a better determination as to which is really better.

Our problem is compounded by the fact that our local telephone service is wholly state-owned while international service is C & W. Translation, no DSL anytime soon.

You may get it sooner than you think, thanks to someone who works at my company, who advises your government on telecoms

I hope he was not the one who advised them on ISDN. That was a miserable failure so they may not listen to him twice.
