  • BT ADSL Sharing

anyone know how to share a BT ADSL connection?

The main pc is running win 2k and the other is running windows millenium. The modem is a USB type.

The machines can see each other on the network but i cannot get the barsteward thing to do any sharing on the internet side of things.

I have a few things to try but any insight you could give would be a help.

Wouldnt be so bad but the thing isnt even mine!

Go to Start | Settings | Network & Dial Up Connections.

Right click on the connection you use to get to the net via the usb/alcatel modem, choose Properties, then the Sharing tab, then check the box that says Enable internat connection sharing for this connection.

This will configure your box with a dhcp server and give the box with the modem plugged in to it an IP address of 192.168.0.1

You then need ro restart your machine (I think).

You should then go to your client machine and change the TCP/IP settings to pick up an IP address from the DCHP server, and use a the networks default gateway. Then change the browser settings on th client to get the browser to use the LAN and not a modem.

that is how the machines are set up. No joy

I have a feeling i may have more luck using an ethernet connection to the modem. I will try next week when i see my friend again.

What does enabling guest do? I'm ics on my machine okay via ethernet and the guest accounts have always been disabled.

Both comps should be set up with a ip adress and the client (win me) comp should use the host (w2k) comps ip adress as the default gateway and dns adress! Also make sure ie on the client comp automaticly detects networks settings!

Birdy did you have any luck yet? I've got BT coming in to work on Monday to install ADSL for us, they would only pay for the business 500 version which is supposedly just for a single PC.

                            Hi Ant,

if you don't want to be messing around with ICS (which requires a machine to be switched on all the time) check out www.adslguide.org.uk, there have been quite a few threads about this recently.

There's a couple of hardware reviews here: http://www.adslguide.org.uk/review_index.asp
