  • RAID/IBM DFT question

Well I had a nice little suprise waiting for me at 5:45AM this morning. I woke up hearing a nice ticking sound coming from my computer. I figured that it was the one the fans and that wire or something had gotten into its way and just needed to get moved. I went to move the mouse since my monitor was in powersave mode and then nothing happened...I rebooted and the highpoint controller didnt pickup my two 60gb IBM GXP drives that I have ...After some panic and doing a cold shut down I finally was able to get the drives to come back up and boot into Windows2K. I ran Norton Disk Doctor and Speed Disk and everything seems fine, but I do get a noise coming from the drives when speed disk starts up....

So this is the question. I know that the DFT doesnt usally pickup hard drives on a RAID controller, so do I have to worry if I take the cable that the drives are on and boot it off one of the VIA controlled IDE ports and have DFT take a look at the drives to see if theres anything wrong with them? I rather not wipe out my data if I dont have too.

    See: http://forums.murc.ws/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29191

You need to backup before you do anything.
One of your drives may be about to crater.
If it goes completely you wil lose the data on
    both drives.

In the case of my drives it was just one cylinder
(or, perhaps a small group) that the drive could
not access. It made noises like the ones you describe.

IBM's been getting a lot of returns on both the Hungarian and the SE Asian 60/75 GXP drives.

Dunno what their problem is, but it's been going on for some time now.

Mine was manufacured in Aug of last year.
I don't remember where. I've sent it back already.

Hmm I think Thialand and they where made this past July/August..I just got home and tried out the DFT and it didnt find any problems with the drives...Maybe the Highpoint Controller went flaky on me. I checked the event viewer on W2K and didnt find anything funky with it crashing or anything...

I guess I'm ok for the time being...

              GT98,
Run DFT in "Exercise" mode for a few rounds.
              Just to be sure.
NB. It is data destructive, so backup first.
