  • CD-RW/DVD drive problems

    Hi all,

I seem to have just recieved a nasty problem. My CD-RW and my DVD drives do not work in Win2k. The drives are correctly detected at boot, but in Win2k the drives have the famous exclamation point on them. I have installed both 4.34v and 4.33v 4in1's (yesterday with 4.33 installed it worked perfectly) and neither seems to help. The rest of my hardware is in my sig.

The last thing installed is a GeForce 2 MX and after that a 486 fan (for on the MX), both were done before this and the drives worked for about a week since that has happened.

A little diagram of my hard drive setup:
    IDE1 -
    Master - Quantum 8.4
    Slave - Toshiba DVD
    IDE2 -
    Master - Plextor CD-RW
    Slave - Nothing

    Thanks for any help.

Are you using the Highpoint controller to run your drives?

If so, you may want to grab the highpoint drivers for win2k and install them and pray

My advice would be to stick with the regular IDE controller.

      Rags,

I should have mentioned that this is the Via686a part of my drives setup, I figured that the Highpoint (the other two hard drives) was unimportant in this case as it doesn't seem to be the cause.

Put the drives together on the same channel, one as master and the other as slave.

I never load VIA's piss-poor Busmaster drivers...sh*t disappears (kinda like what you are seeing...)

Yup place both on the same channel. Go into the bios and disable auto detect for the drives on that channel and then try again. If that fails try the microsft drivers rather than the crappy via stuff.
What software are you using and have you re-installed sp2 as this has an issue with earlier versions of adaptec software.

            The Pit,

As for software, I don't use Adaptec software anymore (for a long time now), SP2 is installed. There might be some software that might be a problem, I had MyDVD installed and then uninstalled it (crashed my system) yesterday.

About the auto detect I'll try that now, I've disabled the Toshiba DVD so far.

[edit] That didn't work the drive was still detected by Windows but still doesn't work [/edit]

Have you tried the standard microsoft drivers rather than the via ide??

I'm also using my DVD and burner on the secondary IDE channel, but not with a Highpoint chipset (won't let one in any of my systems).

                Layout:

                Sec Master: Toshiba DVD

                Sec Slave: Sony CDR/RW

I did have a DVD on the secondary channel of my Abit raid and that had to be Master and had to have the auto detect turned off in the bios before it worked properly. I also didn't use the via ide drivers which made life a lot better. However since then the Via drivers have gone up to 4.34.

Tried the standard Win2k drivers ver. 5.0.2195.2959, and it still didn't work. The only thing wrong seems to be any ATAPI device on my VIA controller.

Here is the exact error message:
This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

Right now I only have the Quantum CR on Primary Master and the Plextor on Secondary Master.

Doc, if I had to choose again I wouldn't pick up this board but since I can't upgrade it, I'll have to make do with what I've got. Though the Highpoint works very well for me.

[edit]After restoring from an older ghost backup, the drives didn't work at first but after setting (in the BIOS) Delay for HD from 1 to 0 the drives miraclusly reappeared[/edit]

suggest you try the fix from here even though you didn't recently uninstall ezcd creator!
