Subtle Differences between Win2K Pro+Server?

I was wondering if there are any subtle differences between the two versions of Windows 2000 (professional and server).

Aside from the server features of the server edition...if you were to install a copy of server without those features, would it behave exactly like Pro (other than the spash screens on shut down and restart)?

Yep, the performance is pretty much the same. Only diff is more processor/memory support & more programs.

HD/network performance is betther on the server versions! That you can however change on w2k pro by using x-setup!

Server is optimized for 2-4 processors and 512MB+ memory, as well as for larger hard drive sizes.

Professional is optimized for 1-2 processors, and 64-256MB memory.

In addition, Server is optimized to give more weight to service processes than foreground applications. In effect this can potentially decrease your FPS in Quake, obviously.

This can be changed though, right? Win2K server defaults to background apps under system/advanced/performance options. You can change it to "foreground apps" there.

Erm, no.

The entire kernel is weighted to "server services".

i.e. IIS, Proxy Server, etc.

Now if you don't RUN any of these, or stop them whilst gaming, then no problem. If, however, they're running, they get more priority.
