• Anybody have 1280x960 working?

Using XFree4, does anyone have a good guide as to how I can get 1280x960 resolution?

1024x768 is too small, but I like that 4:3 aspect ratio.

Err,

I assume you've tried this:

Section "Screen"
(...)
Subsection "Display"
(...)
Modes "1280x960"

... but it isn't working? What's the problem?

See also the XFree86-Video-Timings-HOWTO,
especially Section 2 ("Why this HOWTO is obsolete").

Nope, I haven't tried that. The first step, I suppose, is a Modeline calculator. Got one handy?

Then again, maybe not. Thanks for the link.

I hadn't tried this since 3.3.6

Erg. Same problem I used to have. Resolution is 1280x960. But with a 1280x1024 Workspace.

Almost got it.

That's what would happen if you had:

Modes "1280x960"
Virtual 1280 1024

But I think you would've spotted that

Another possibility is that you're now listing both "1280x1024" and "1280x960" as Modes. That would set the virtual size to 1280x1024.

If you can't find your problem, can you post your config file and XFree86 logs?

I usually just stick to 1600x1200 *grin* But I think in Xfree4 you should just be able to put the resolution of 1280x960 and it'll automatically set up the refresh rates and everything. I don't really think the modeline is used as much as it used to be, it creates it's own. But then again, I could be completely wrong. Actually my monitor will go up to 2048x1536, but it's only at 60 hz, a little too harsh on the eyes. Laters.

Yeah, this is the resolution I'm running on my primary display. I have my own modeline with 80Hz refresh and it works great:
Modeline "1280x960" 152.96 1280 1360 1544 1896 960 960 963 1008
And only specified modes 1280x960 and below...And viewport at 0 0, no other options in my config...

Don't know, if XF4 can calcute this, I think I got higher refresh with xvidtune than with auto XF.

Ees,
I do still have 1280x1024 listed as a mode, but I thought that only the first mode listed was counted as your default size.

I have Mode "1280x960" "1280x1024" "800x600"

And soon to add the DVD resolutions. videolan is working pretty well. Now to find the emu10k1 drivers that support AC3 output, recompile my XFree4.10 since I lost it from before, and get this box rolling.

Maybe CounterStrike will run better.

Okay, I took the x1024 line out completely, and everything is happy at 1280x960. Strangely enough, X doesn't seem to use the same mode information as my Windows installation.

> Okay, I took the x1024 line out completely, and everything is happy at 1280x960.

man XF86Config

Virtual xdim ydim
(... snip ...)
If this entry is not present, the virtual screen resolution will be set to accommodate all the valid video modes given in the Modes entry. (...)

So this behaviour is expected.

> Strangely enough, X doesn't seem to use the same mode information as my Windows installation.

What do you mean by that? When XFree (internally) computes its modelines, it comes up with something different than Windows? Resulting in (for example) different horizontal offsets?

If that's what you mean: I think that's unavoidable. Both X and Windows will query your monitor for its capabilities and create some "modeline" based on that. However, I think neither X nor Windows can know what "horizontal offset" you've told your monitor to use, so presumably they have to pick something (not sure here, I don't know the EDID specs). And probably they just pick something different...

Not just the offset, but also the size. That's what was odd to me.

I'll probably copy my windows settings over, so I'm not screwing with the monitor all the time.

I know with Xfree86 3.3.x you used to just have to use Xvidtune and you could set up modelines that way. Not sure with Xfree86 4.x since I've never had a problem with that. It automatically set my refresh rate and everything to what they should be (which oddly, win2k didn't by default, but WindowsXP did.) So how does Counterstrike run through wine? What video card/CPU speed are you running? Like I said in my other post, I'm having problems getting Rune working at a decent speed. I have the Marvel (which has 16mb of RAM) and a P3 850 with 320mb of RAM. It runs quite choppy. I have it running at AGP X4 and it works a bit better than it did at 1X, also, I've noticed that my Apeture size on this Mother board (Asus CUSL2) only goes up to 64mb. Not sure if this has anything to do with it. Anyhow.... enough of my rantings right now.
I'd suggest giving xvidtune a try, it's very much like the Powerdesk custom monitor settings. Good luck, laters.
