  • Modem woes in Linux-Abject failure to connect

I know this may seem simple but has anyone in the UK used Mandrake 8 to connect to BTinternet?
Whenever I try, PPPD dials out to BT but seems to fail on authentication (error 16). The while process lasts between 10 and 30 seconds.

    Use minicom...

See the <a href="http://www.rt.com/man/minicom.1.html">minicom man page</a> for how to use minicom to diagnose your connection problem. All you need is a /dev/modem link to the right serial port. Then you can use minicom to dial out "ATDT <phone number>" and then try to authenticate manually, kinda like a telnet session. If this works, then we have to figure out how to make the Mandrake tools behave. If not, your ISP might need some special configuration wrt authentication.
