  • Question about Mystique/Millenium

    Hi, guys...

I am about to purchase a bit old Matrox card. What I see are Millenium II and Mystique 220, and the price difference is minimal.
Please, someone help to reach right decision.

#1. Which one is faster in what applications?
(Mystique, Mystique220, Millenium, Millenium II PCI, Millenium II AGP)

I was searching all over the net, and found one that says Mystique is faster than Millenium. Is that true? I remember asking same question at Comdex Chicago 5(?) years ago. The Matrox representative couldn't give me straight answer.

#2. Are there any differences in Rainbow Runnder Studio(original) for Mystique and Millenium?

    Thank you very much.

the mystique is really slow in 1024*768*32 @ 120hz in 2d.
it was so slow, I actually had to wonder about framerates in explorer
and dragging a window was a pain.
This sig is a shameless atempt to make my post look bigger.

      huh,
If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.

it is indeed, my dad was using it in his p3 866mhz with a sony g200 monitor he had to switch to 16 bit.
however it is ok in 85 hz.
        I was surprised too.

i think it was being pushed to its very limits at 1024*768*32@ 120hz
it couldn´t even do better than 60 hz in 1600*1200
even though it had the 2mb memory upgrade: 4mb total

that resolution in those hz was out of this world when the mystique was new, its very old renember.

          Mystique in 3dgames:

i have tried the following games with the mystique:

          jedi knight:
playable in 512*384*16 and below, looked like software-rendering, because it can´t filter the textures.

          rollcage:
the game runs, but too slow.

          darkstone:
game runs, but too slow, and the "fog of war" isn´t rendered correctly.

          conclusion:
some direct3d games will work, but it won´t be pretty and it won´t be fast.
          opengl doesn´t work

for 2d: it will do the job, if you don´t asks too much of it, beats onboard-video.

afaik the mystique is a stripped down version of the millenium, when it comes to 2d, but a bit faster in 3d, (it was a gamers card).

I don´t know rainbow runner, or the millenium cards, but afaik the millenium2 agp is the best of those you mentioned.

            I have used a millenium2 8MB with a RRS since '97.
It was a fast card back then and still fells faster than most onboard video options you get today.

if you plan on doing video editing i would recommend using the mystique instead.
because it supports more capture modes.
i mean different resolutions x bits depth.

otherwise go for the Mill2 AGP

Why don´t you go for a G200 instead? It must be really cheap too...
