  • !!!RainRunnerG & MSP vidcap question for gurus

Here is a tough one I've been working on for over a month. I'm not sure if
it's H/W or S/W so will post both:
I have a Rainbow RunnerG for my athlon 600/ 256MB/ FIC mobo/ matrox mil D400
dual with bundled Ulead MSP 5.0/ SB live.
During video capture in Ulead Vid Cap (if you look close) you sometimes will
see maybe one frame which is highly distorted and then the preview goes to
B&W (You do not notice it in overlay mode). When this happens, the captured
AVI is corrupted. When I go to look at it in Ulead Video Editor, and move
the scroll bar, it will shut down and display the cryptic message "this
program has performed an illegal operation....invalid page fault in module
RRICMEXT.DLL...etc). It does this randomly and rarely, although in a 10
minute capture, the chances are 50-50 that it will happen. It has done this
in various resolutions and frame rates, in both Vid Cap and Matrox PCTV
remote. It has does this with line input or TV in. Sometimes I see the
distortion flash just watching t.v. (not capturing).

I have gone so far as to create a separate optimized Windows profile for my
    captures (http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/144f6.htm). My dropped
frames are now typically 0.15% now. I have a dedicated 20G IBM ultraATA66
drive (9 -10 MB/sec benchmark) for my video. I've loaded all the latest
Matrox, bus master drivers, video tools. No IRQ conflicts. I tried BIOS
graphics apertures 128M and 256M. I sent the Rainbow Runner back to Matrox
for an exchange, but it does the same. Matrox and ULead tech support (if you
can get them) havn't helped. Any clues ?? to any gurus?? out there before I
return the thing back to Matrox......DonBeto

I have found the solution (at least in my case) to the problem with the
Rainbow Runner-G going to B&W and causing corrupt captured files
(un-editable in Ulead Vid Editor). I have seen posts here and on
other groups of same or similar problem.

In my case, changing the screen resolution to 800x600 (16 bit) works ALL the
time (even though Matrox suggests 1024x768). I don't fully understand the
reason, except maybe the higher resolutions take up more video resources,
memory, or whatever. Thought I would pass this on
