  • Recommend me a CDRW

I just sold my 10X Sony, so I'm after a 16X really (maybe even a 20X or 24X). I've been told Lite-On actually use Plextor internals, and they work quite well. Memorex ones are quite cheap - anyone had any experience with these?

I wouldn't mind going back to good old SCSI as I just prefer SCSI for CD Writing.

The Lite On 16x10x40 can be had here for ~$80+s/h

The first, last, and perhaps ONLY name in CD recording is Plextor.

That said, you can go to http://welcome.to/cloneclinic (the website of the Clone Clinic) and ask them if those Lite-On drives do, in fact, have Plextor guts... they'll know, they keep track of these things.

      Tell 'em Gurm sent ya.

I would recomand Plextor, they have an 24x burner on the market.

        Either:
        Plextor PleXwriter 16/10/40A
        or:
        Plextor PleXwriter 24/10/40A

We just got one og the 24x drives at my office, it looks good!

The TEAC W512E is also a fine drive. It's "only" 12/10/32, but it's VERY stable/robust, has BurnProof AND a 4MB Cache and it's not very expensive. The average access time is very low (for a CDR), too: 85ms. If you prefer SCSI, there's the equally-specced W512S (might be tho only good SCSI CDR, now that Plextor quit the market).
And if you want it faster, there's the W516E (16/10/40), this one unfortunately only for ATAPI. But a 12x drive should be more than enough for everyone: a x12 drive will take <6mins for a whole CD, a x16 drive will take <4,5 min. BUT you have to pay A LOT more for this 1.5 min difference... And then there are some things like checking the CD, writing lead-in/lead-out that don't fully profit from the faster speed so you'll end with an even smaller real gain.
But we named the *dog* Indiana...

Steve, Scan are selling a Yamaha 16x10x40x SCSI drive for £ 94.50 + VAT, this is a retail box and may possibly come with a SCSI card as well.

Some people here don't like the Yamaha's but I've never had any problems with them.

Yamaha is a crapshoot. For every person I've seen who loves 'em there's another person who can't make theirs work for shit.

Go Plextor. End of story. (Teac is cheaper, but Plextor is better...)

Have to agree with Gurm here...
I recently bought a Plex, but before that, I used a Teac (both SCSI)
Both of them are very good and I would recommend both brands to anyone who wants to buy a CD-burner.

                  Thanks for the input guys.
Actually, I've made up my mind - I want to go SCSI, and at least 16X. So that leaves out Plextor?

Grr... yes, for the time being that does leave out Plextor.

However, I'd seriously consider the Plextor 12x10x32 scsi over anyone else's 16x, since nobody has yet produced a TRUE 16x drive.
