  • My modem hell.....

Help! I've used an old, trusty internal USR ISA PnP modem for quite some time. I've had great luck with it - quick connections, rarely less than 48k, etc. Recently it's developed a problem. It will still connect quickly, but sometimes it just dies. Doesn't disconnect, but just won't send or receive. I then disconnect (this is all in WinME), wait, and when I try to re-connect, I see a disconnecting...message, then error 630 modem not responding. If I uninstall the modem in software, then re-install it, this usually works, but sometimes it doesn't. Obviously this is impractical anyways. It is not a conflict problem. It sits at IRQ 5 all by itself, using com2, which is disabled in the BIOS. No recent changes to the system, and has worked great for several years.

So I figured I'd replace it with a USR Performance Pro Modem, a PCI-controller-based modem that I was using in my LINUX box with questionable results. Features sounded great. This modem is a massive POS. Now, on the same exact phone line, in the same computer, it will rarely connect over 31k, and if it does, it will usually disconnect in 15 min. Pop the ol' USR ISA modem back in, bingo, connects immediately at at least 48k, but then it will develop the above problems, or it may work for hours. I haven't contacted USR tech support, because this is usually a long, painful ordeal. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

I just installed a new Hayes modem which is doing better than the USR POS, but not as fast as my trusty ISA USR.

    Thanks, John

P.S. Does anyone know the command for modem dialing speed? The Hayes takes what seems like forever to dial.

    John,
Try changing your init string to just ATZ to go with factory defaults.
Try S11=50 for the dialing speed.

    That would make it ATZS11=50

(My old Zoom 2400 came with the best modem manual I have ever seen!
    See? I still use it.)
