  • Firewire not capturing in Premire 6

I am using a firwire card that has a Texas Instruments chipset [like 99% of all the other cards i have found around !!!] The FW card ias recognoxed by WIn 2K in device manager, and all is sweet... when i plug in my Sony D8 Cam the devide is recognized as a DVcam under theaudio/video codecs WHEN it should be under Imaging devices for Premiere to work with it.... NOthing is weird yet... adobe has posted a work around this in this article under TI Class drivers...

Unable to Capture Using Texas Instruments DV Device in Premiere 6.0 for Windows

    Issue
When you try to capture from a Texas Instruments DV device (e.g., 1394 DV Camcorder) in Adobe Premiere 6.0 for Windows, Premiere does not display the device in the Capture dialog box.

    Solutions

    Do either of the following:

    Solution 1
If you use Windows 2000 or Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), use the UnTI utility to automatically disable the Texas Instruments DV Class driver and enable the Microsoft DV Class driver. You can download the utility from the ADS Technologies Web site at www.adstech.com/downloads/pyro.html.

    Solution 2
Manually disable the Texas Instruments DV Class driver, and enable the Microsoft DV Class driver:
    1. Make sure that the camcorder is connected and turned on, and then choose Start > Programs > Windows Explorer (Windows 98 SE) or Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer (Windows 2000, Windows Millennium Edition [Me]).
    2. Choose Tools > Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
    3. Select Show Hidden Files and Folders, deselect Hide File Extensions for Known File Types, and then click OK.
    4. Right-click My Computer, and choose Properties from the pop-up menu.
    5. Click the Device Manager tab (Windows 98 SE, Windows Me) or click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager (Windows 2000).
    6. Double-click Sound Video and Game Controllers, select 1394 DV Camcorder, and then click Delete (Windows 98 SE, Windows 2000) or Remove (Windows Me).
    7. Turn off the camcorder.
    8. Navigate to the [X]:\Windows\Inf folder, where [X] is the system drive, and then delete the following files:
    - Dvcam.inf
    - Dvcam.sys
    - Dvcam.pnf
    10. Turn on the camcorder.
    11. If any Version Conflict dialog boxes appear, click Yes.

    Extracted from http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/27322.htm

But when i follow there steps to remedy the problem... can't find the dvcam.* files and everytime i try to switych the cam back ON it is installed in the device manager as a TI class....

I need to sort this issue out... ineed to capture footage for a job...

The funny thing is it used to work before i reformatted a while back... it was recognized as an imaging device. The firwire card is sharing IRQ 9 with many devices could that be the cause [i guess not since the device is not showing any conflict]

I'm not sure that UnTI.exe works for non ADS cards

    Are you showing hidden files?
    for Solution 2

This is recommended whatever as Video Capture Update for DX8 updates the MS 1394 driver.

Install DirectX 8.0a & Video Capture Update for DX8

      Hey John

I was just on the DVE forum and i was hoping i could get in touch with you !!!! what a small world afer all !!!

I have updated to DX8 + Applied the DV patch... but i do not get the option of seeing the DVcam files even with the view all hidden/system files option being set to view! It's wierd since it was working in the past !

      Two things that came to mind while i am at work here ! ;

I have not used the drivers on ther floppy that came with the card - i think i might have the first time ! Not sure that there even was a floppy will check when i go home.

I have currently gotten + installed the Avid XPress DV 2 software... could it's installation be the culprit ???

      I have a completely different DV query here too;

Which captures DV as avi1 or avi2 MSP/Vegas Video/Premitere6 and which is better [more stable...etc]

      thanx

On Windows 2000 with a "generic" TI based 1394 card the drivers automatically installed that were included when you installed W2K should work. Device Manager should say:

TexasInstruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller

        Under properties:
        Driver Provider: Microsoft
        Driver Date: Not Available
        Driver Version: 5.0.2183.1
        Driver Signer: Not digitally signed

        Under Driver Details:
        C:\WINNT\System32\DRIVERS\1394bus.sys
        C:\WINNT\System32\DRIVERS\ohci1394.sys

        file version: 5.00.2195.2104
The properties version on these two sys files should match this number.

This is after sp2, DirectX8 and the DirectX8 DV update.

I like the capture utility from www.sonicfoundry.com for Vegas Video. It'll capture either Type1 or Type2 depending on a checkbox setting. You can find it in the Demo Download section for Vegas Video. I believe the capture utility is still "free" and not timebombed or limited in any way as far as I can tell.

If you are going to edit with premiere, you need type 2 DV files.

        --wally.

          Have to check

I'm in the office right now, away from the machine, i will have to check on the settings but i am sure that i am not getting those specs, I know for sure i am getting OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller not the Texas Instruments setting though - even though i tried to update the driver to that did not help... I realized many have faced the same problem, Now i am wondering whether i should use MSP instead, what do you think, i don't believe MSP has the same limitation that premiere has - which is that it does not ccept using TI's DV driver/codedc for capture.

In you opinion, which is a better DV editing enviroment Premiere or MSP ? I believe MSP uses avi1 type right ?

wat are the pros and cons of avi1 and avi2 on a standard pc editing system, i know avi2 needs a bit more rersources as it has a separate stream for the audio or somthing if that sort!

It is good that you recommended the Sonic FOundry Capture Tool coz i was getting sick trying to find the best one, have tested other packages' capturing util and deduced that SF Capture tool is the best ?

Thanx and sorry for the detailed queries here...

            If you haven't got
            Dvcam.inf
            Dvcam.sys
            Dvcam.pnf
you haven't got TI 1394 installed (Good)

What does it say under Driver Details in DVCam?

I suggest deleting the DV cam entry in Device Manager & restarting.

            You said:
'I have not used the drivers on ther floppy that came with the card' What card do you have?

            You said:
            'Which editor is best?'

It all depends on your needs, for titles, straight cuts & crossfades there isn't much difference. (IMO)

              I'll ahve 2 check

I willbe home in a couple of hours , I'll check what it says under properties ! I think it said soemthing about Texas Instruments in there....I have a standard non branded [i guess ] OHCI card with TI chipset...

On the editors i actually use After Effects alot, i hat Premiere ! What i awanted to know was which handeled DV avi files better, coz it gets a bit tiring key framing cross fades in AE5 !

Oh, i am havinga a bit of a problem importing DV captured files in to AE5... in the offive I used DV500 for capturing DV avis and no problems, could it be the type of DV files 1VS2 ?

The properties are as you stated !

I can't seem to get it to work though... I even installed DVConnect330.exe to force the the DVcam.* files ino the winnt/inf folder as they were never there ! Still can't get it to use Microsoft DV codec !!! Any other ideas ?

I have many devices sharing IRQ9 as you can see, do u think it has anything to do with it ?

                My PC keeps choosing customDV.inf as the correct driver for the device... which ends up in device manager under Sound, video and game controllers as a device by the following name;

                1394 DV Camcorder (Non DirectShow)
                Attached Files

                  I don't know what 'customDV.inf ' is?
I found this on google.com but it means nothing.
I don't have this inf file on my computer 98SE or 2000.

I suggest that you copy 'customDV.inf ' to a safe place then delete it from your puter (AT YOUR OWN RISK). You may have to replace it so make sure you know where it lives.

The file you require for MS 1394 device control is msdv.inf

Not knowing what 1394 card you have is a problem & this info may not be correct for your card?
