  • Suggestions for best video card for older computer?

I've got a neihbor that has an older computer (P120 or something like that, 16MB of RAM) that has a dying video card. I thing he has a 15" monitor, but it may be a 17"; regardless, the monitor is old. He does have Windows 98SE installed thanks to yours truly.

The computer just needs to last a "little longer," until the wife's company pops for another one. When exactly that is going to happen he doens't know, just that it will be "soon."

So, what I'm looking for is a cheap PCI video card that has STABLE drivers, and is CHEAP. Doesn't have to do 3D at all.

Would an older Mystique or Millenium be a good idea? Or maybe a Voodoo3 2000?

    I could use some help!

    Thanks!

I'd say any PCI Millennium/Mystique would do a nice job, at least the picture wouldn't get worse than the monitor itself and I guess that you'd find plenty of cheap used cards online or even in your local store.

G200 Mystique would offer an additional TV out for playing chess on the big screen or something like that ...

OUCH 16MB of ram on w98se try to hunt down some used EDO modules while your @ it! Also make sure you install cacheman 5 ( d/load from www.tweakfiles.com ) couse it will speed up a low memory system like that a lot!

        Thanks for the replies!

I guess after looking around a bit at PriceWatch , my real dilemma is what graphics card to choose.

        What would be better: A Millenium 2MB or a Mystique 220 4MB, or a Millenium 4MB (2MB add-on module installed)?

        The Millenium 2MB is $14, the Mystique 220 4MB is $29, and the Millenium 4MB is $38.

This is also a Millenium II 8MB or WRAM for $20, but its for a MAC. Is that the same card, or is it tailor made for MAC's.

Just for perspective, a Voodoo3 2000 Retail box is available for $49.

Surprisingly, the computer responds pretty good for its age. For what these people use it for, it gets the job done. I haven't looked at it in a while, so it may have 32MB or RAM on it; I'm pretty sure though that it has 16MB on it.

        Thanks again!
