  • Radeon 8500, the Matrox card that should have been

im reading the preview of the new ATI Radeon 8500 and the more i read the more i realize its the new killer card that should have come from matrox. its got the video quality there, and with a 400mhz RAMDAC its gotta have some kick ass 2D quality. hydravision and all.

... i feel that if ATI gets some decent drivers out that run well in win2k, they may steal a good bit of the matrox owners who were waiting for the next big thing...

/rhetorical question WTF does the speed of the RAMDAC have to do with 2D quality?

This misinformation was spread long enough by the major review sites to make it general "knowledge". Just as most people think a Monitor with 130 KHz and .23 dot-pitch always has to have better quality than another with 110KHz, .25 dot-pitch. Technical data sheets (created mainly for marketing) just don't tell the whole story.
It's the same with cars: the 0-60Mph mark alone doesn't say that much. For example we have both, an old Mercedes 500SE and an (even older) BMW 325i. While faster on the paper the BMW doesn't stand any chance against the Mercedes in the real-world: This is because in the 0-60Mph mark the Mercedes takes a hit due to it's weight. When both cars are rolling, however, the V8 and the bigger 5.0 l engine of the Mercedes make the small BMW engine look pale.

The 1990 Toyota Celica GT will still kick the MB's ass when not going in a straith line!
According to the latest official figures, 43% of all statistics are totally worthless...

            Depends on the drivers....
Those old MBs can be droven fast in curves when you know how to handle them, they're just not that willing to (and the "typical" Mercedes driver won't do it anyway)

Maybe we are reading this topic on NVidia-cards, since somehow we seem to have LOST THE FOCUS

I would hope not. Since nobody _I_ know can afford a monitor that can do 110KHz, nevermind one that can do 130KHz! I mean, hot damn... that's what... 200Hz vertical? HOT DAMN!

Gurm, try this one: http://www.iiyama.com/product2/a201ht.htm Available at ~$850 - in germany, in the US those things are normally quite a bit cheaper. And this is not that expensive (for it's class)
Or this: http://www.iiyama.com/product2/MS101D.HTM, available at ~$750.

Nice to hear, I'm looking into buying one quite heavily at the moment to replace my old Iiyama VisionMaster 17".
Anyone know a decently priced (that seems to exclude Sony), high quality alternative?
