    Here's a Funny Analogy from a co-worker....

Is it just me or is the response to computer viruses today similar to the response to real viruses in the middle ages?

    Detection:

    Middle Ages:
Yup, the person has a cold

    Today:
Yup, we have an internet worm crawling in our systems

    Analysis:

    Middle Ages:
Viruses live in blood ergo the blood is bad [so maybe they didn't know about viruses, but they knew the bad stuff made its way into the blood]

    Today:
The worm infects the http port

    Workaround:

    Middle Ages:
    Remove the faulty blood!

    Today:
    Remove the faulty port!

    Outcome:

    Middle Ages:
Oh, you mean a person can't live without blood? Hmmm, time for a transfusion.

    Today:
Oh, you mean it's very hard to get productive work done without web-based services? Hmmm, time for a transfer.

Sure, it is a "detect, contain, eliminate" response, but I just wonder at times like this if IT realized or cared that their containment was
tantamount to a "lines down" situation.
    Thanks Ben,

    Paul

The Code Red worm is known to operate only from the 1st to 20th of each month, after which it launches a (so far broken) attack on US government computers. What this means for most of us is that it only plays havoc with our bandwidth for 20 days a month. Or, as a sysadmin at work remarked to me, 'It's that time of month'.

The Internet now has a time of month. The Internet is female. And, as her 'time of month' lasts 20 days out of every 30, she's a *real bitch*.
