  • -=- Help me out :/ -=-

    Helloha!
    I got some wierd problem.
Few (2-3) years ago I bought a computer with my friend, we bought the same computer, just a diffrent displey adapter. I got 350MHz, 128RAM, 7200RPM hdd.
However, I am tryin to watch divxs, 99% of them won't work well, they won't run smoothly! I gave my friend to try watchin' the movie, and it works perfect. We even formated to seek for the problem, and couldn't understand what it is. I tried few players such as ThePlaya, Global DivX player, Microsoft media player etc,
nothin would appear to work. (I must mention VCDS runs fine).
    Please help me. :/

    Well....

You sure your friend hasn't upgraded his computer parts? If I remember correctly, you need quite a processor to get divx movies to run smoothly at higher resolutions. 350Mhz isn't going to cut it (and since the fastest that can be is a Pentium II core, I don't think the graphics adapter will be much different if you change it.). 128MB RAM could be better with a little more processing power IMHO.

However, it IS late where I am, I might not be thinking straight So who knows, maybe someone with more experience with divx can help.

Oh, and this IS in the wrong forum, should've been in the general forum at least, if not the desktop video forum, as this has (currently anyway) got nothing to with Matrox Hardware.

If he has a video card with hardware mpeg assist (some ATI cards) then that might explain it.

We need to know more about your systems though.

There is also a problem with G400s playing some movies that are in a resolution that isnt able to be divided by 32.

Let us know what you have, and you might get more usefull help

        Well,
First of all, my friend has voodoo 3.
        I have 350MHz, 128ram 7200rpm as I said, running windows 2000
corrently, nothin special is installed that can take my resources.
Uhm.. what else? I got Matrox Mellenium G400.
What else would you like to know?

Btw, if I 'plug' 3dfx card, would it help? (probably silly question but anyways, worth a try, I can't watch any divx movies )

Simple: You just need to install the G400 DivX fix, this fixes the playback problems with DivX files that's width isn't evenly dividable by 32.
          Find it here: http://www.tac.ee/~prr/videoutils/

            Hi amk,

I hate to say it, but for your P2-350 the biggest resource hog is Win2k ...

Seriously, if you used W98 before, you will experience loss of performance just be switching to Win2k.

Try to get a used P3 and you should be happy or at least you should look at the option to overclock your P2.

              Hey Maggi! (un female
Aight, I'll try to install Win98 and I hope it'll work better.
However, I still don't get it, how come my computer, looks the same just as my friend's computer, with win2k, and it works perfect..

amk, have you tried the DivX patch mentioned above?
Or, to put it in clear words: your computer WILL NOT give you smooth playback for ANY DivX that's width is not evenly dividable by 32 (this includes most of them) REGARDLESS of the used OS or CPU-speed as long as the machine is equipped with the G400.

The reason for this is that with those DivX movies on the G400 the overlay does not get used, so the playback WILL look terrible (blocky) and be jerky as hell.
You could test this and put your friends V3 in your computer - you'll get smooth playback - or simply install the DivX fix for the G400 and you'll be fine, too.

and these other guys are right....you need the divx hack if you want divx to play properly. If you don't have it, you're lucky it plays at all....Matrox does not officially support that codec.

Okay, just tried that patch above. guess what, it won't f*** work ;(
anyway, I'll just try plug some voodoo3 to check if it works.
I also recommend gettin a new comp huh.

of course, when you set the resolution and or refresh rate too high, the card still can't use overlay for playback.

Try that patch (or the sasami2k player), and set your desktop res to 800x600x32 @75Hz when playing the DivX ;-) file back.
