  • LInux 2.4.6 DRM

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but does linux 2.4.6 still not have the correct DRM for XFree 4.1.0? I know http://www.xfree86.org/~alanh/ had drm source for 2.4.5, which I was using, but now it seems it won't compile against 2.4.6. Ah well.

    I am using 2.4.6, but with the drm module from the DRI CVS source tree. I don't think 2.4.6 has the updated drm module yet. Why can't you use the alanh source?

      xfree86 4.1 is all screwed up..... apparently the modules that come with the kernel is made for xfree86 4.0.2/4.0.3

      you must compile it from source for it to work.....

      maybe next 4.1.x release will be a little better..

        It's not Xfree86 4.1 that is messed up. It's a simple matter of getting the correct DRM compiled for it. You can get the source code to compile the kernel module yourself. It's not that hard. If you ran Mandrake it's just a simple upgrading of the kernel packages because Mandrake DID compile the correct DRM for the kernel. Ever since the kernel-2.4.5-5mdk it has had the Xfree86 4.1 DRM module. Though my question is, how do you get DRI working on a Marvel G400 in 24 bit color mode? Others here at one point said they had gotten it to work, but I just tried it yesterday and no such luck. Do I have to download the Matrox driver? (I haven't done that for a while, simply because I've been too lazy.)

          24 bpp mode

          Look at the DRI users guide. It has an example of using 24 bpp/ 32 bpp mode. You can use it with either the XFree driver or the mga driver, doesn't matter.

            Ok, I tried it the first time around, didn't work. Then I noticed in the sample file that the resolution is 1280x1024. So I switched it to that, and it worked. Problem is after being used to 1600x1200 and going into 1280x1024 it looks HUGE. I'm guessing this is because I have a Marvel which of course only has 16mb of RAM. Any clues? This would be my best guess, since I know in 32bit mode in windows I can't do 3D in 1600x1200. Anyhow, if anyone knows a way around this it'd be nice. Until then, perhaps I'll stick to 16bpp. Laters.

              Well, after some odd kernel compilation issues, I did get the alanh source to compile against 2.4.6. Weird.
